1.5 Adding Integers

Adding Integers! When adding two positive numbers, Start at 5 Move to the right 7 spaces Answer : 12

Adding Integers! When adding a negative number to a positive number, (-3) Start at 9 Answer : 6 Move to the left 3 spaces

How do we add positive and negative integers? Think in terms of number chips Example: We can think of 4 as four positive chips +4

How do we add positive and negative integers? Think in terms of number chips Another example: We can think of -3 as three negative chips -3

Let’s do an example using chips! Use number chips! ANSWER

Let’s do an example! Use number chips! ANSWER One negative chip and one positive chip cancel!

Let’s do an example! Use number chips! 3 + (-5) ANSWER One negative chip and one positive chip cancel! -5

Let’s do an example! Use number chips! ANSWER -3 One negative chip and one positive chip cancel! -8 +5

Let’s do an example! Use number chips! -3 + (-5) ANSWER -8 There are no chips to cancel! -5 -3

Your Turn!

-3 + (-8) -11 ANSWER Number Chips!

4 + (-5) ANSWER Number Chips! +4 -5

ANSWER Number Chips! -3 +9

WS TIME!

What is the rule?

Basically : When adding or subtracting integers, 1.If the signs are the same, find the sum and put the sign in front of the answer. 2. If the signs are different, find the difference and put the sign of the LARGER number in front of the answer.

1.6 Subtracting Integers!

Subtracting Integers Let’s start with signs What is the sign on: 17 Positive

Subtracting Integers Let’s start with signs What is the sign on: -68 Negative

Subtracting Integers Let’s start with signs What is the sign on: 5 Positive

Subtracting Integers Let’s start with signs What is the sign on: -22 Negative

Subtracting Integers Now let’s work on opposites What is the opposite of:

Subtracting Integers Now let’s work on opposites What is the opposite of:

Subtracting Integers Now let’s work on opposites What is the opposite of: -9 9

Subtracting Integers To subtract integers: Add the opposite of (-11) Evaluate using integer addition 9 + (-11) = -2

Subtracting Integers To subtract integers: Add the opposite of (-8) Evaluate using integer addition -6 + (-8) = -14

Subtracting Integers To subtract integers: Add the opposite of – (-9) -9 + (9) Evaluate using integer addition -9 + (9) = 0

Subtracting Integers To subtract integers: Add the opposite of -1 5 – (-1) 5 + (1) Evaluate using integer addition 5 + (1) = 6

Subtracting Integers To subtract integers: Add the opposite of – (10) -4 + (-10) Evaluate using integer addition -4 + (-10) = -14

Subtracting Integers To subtract integers: Add the opposite of -8 2 – Evaluate using integer addition = 10

Subtracting Integers To subtract integers: Add the opposite of – (-5) Evaluate using integer addition = 2

Subtracting Integers To subtract integers: Add the opposite of – (-21) Evaluate using integer addition 12 + (-21) = -9

Subtracting Integers To subtract integers: Add the opposite of 5 and 2 -3 – 5 – (-5) + (-2) Evaluate using integer addition = 10

BINGO TIME!

What are the rules?? If it’s a subtraction problem, CHANGE IT TO AN ADDITION PROBLEM BY CHANGING THE SECOND NUMBER TO THE OPPOSITE. Then use integer addition rules! If the signs are the same : FIND THE SUM! The answer will have the same sign as the other numbers. If the signs are different : FIND THE DIFFERENCE! The answer will have the same sign as the LARGER number!
