Subtracting Integers Algebraically
2
How to Subtract Integers Algebraically 1.Rewrite the problem Keep the first number the same Change the problem from subtraction to addition Make the last number its opposite 2.Now follow adding integer rules Same sign – add the numbers keep the sign Different signs – subtract the numbers, keep the sign of the greater absolute value
3
Examples 1. -7 – 14 -7 + -14 -21 2.13 – 19 13 + -19 -6 Rewrite the problem Add the numbers and keep the sign Rewrite the problem Subtract the numbers and keep the sign of the greater absolute value
4
Practice Problems 1.-15 – 3 2.10 – 20 3.15 - -7 4.-23 - -10 5.9 – 13 6.-4 - - 13 7.-7 - 18 Rewrite the problem. Then follow addition rules for integers. = -18 = -10 = 22 = -13 = -4 = 9 = -25
