Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying, and Diving Integers!!!

Rules of adding integers 1)If the signs of the two numbers are the same then add the numbers together and take the sign. 2)If the signs of the numbers are different then subtract and take the sign of the largest number.

Examples of adding integers -6 + (-5) = -11 The signs of the two numbers are the same so we simply add the two numbers together and take the sign. -4 + 3 = -1 The signs of the two numbers are different so we subtract the numbers and take the sign of the largest number.

Rules of subtracting integers 1) In order to subtract integers we use the rule: Leave, Change, Opposite. What this means is that we leave the first number alone, we change the sign of the problem to addition, then we do the opposite of the last number. If the number was a negative then it now becomes a positive.

Try these on your own!! 1)-7 + 4 =8) -6 x -2 = 2)-14 + -4 =9) 8 x -6 = 3)6 + (-1) =10) -18 / 2 = 4)-5 – 3 =11) 24 / -6 = 5)-2 – (-14) =12) -30 / -5 = 6)7 – (-2) = 7)4 x -5 =

Examples of subtracting integers -5 – 6 = -11 Using the Leave, Change, Opposite rule, we leave the -5 alone, we change the sign of the problem to addition, and the opposite of 6 is - 6. After the changes have been made the problem will now read as -5 + (-6) which we know equals -11.

Rules of multiplying integers 1)If the signs of both numbers are the same then multiply the numbers together and the answer will be positive. 2)If the signs of the numbers are different then multiply the numbers together and the answer will be negative.

Examples of multiplying integers -6 x -4 = 24 Since both numbers were the same we simply multiplied the two numbers together and the answer will be positive. -4 x 2 = -8 Since the numbers have different signs we multiply the two numbers together and the answer will be negative.

Rules of dividing integers 1)If the two numbers have the same sign then divide the numbers and the answer will be positive. 2)If the two numbers have different signs then divide the numbers and the answer will be negative.

Examples of dividing integers -6 / -2 = 3 Since both numbers have the same sign, we divide the two numbers and the answer will be positive. -14 / 7 = -2 Since the two numbers have different signs, we divide the numbers and the answer will be negative.
