ACTS 13 HOW TO SEND OUT MISSIONARIES God’s Witnesses to the World (Growing, Glowing, Going )

INTRODUCTION “The Spirit of Christ is the spirit of missions, and the nearer we get to Him the more intensely missionary we must become.” “The Spirit of Christ is the spirit of missions, and the nearer we get to Him the more intensely missionary we must become.” This watershed chapter in our book shows several major shifts in Luke’s history of the early church. Luke shows us a total willingness to be used of God in moving out to proclaim the gospel wherever he would send his servants. We must develop in our congregation the mentality of global Christianity, a mentality so thoroughly demonstrated by the church of Antioch. Send Called People (1-5) Chosen by the Spirit (1-2) Chosen by the Spirit (1-2) Commissioned by the local church (3) Commissioned by the local church (3) Complied with the Spirit’s will (4-5) Complied with the Spirit’s will (4-5) God leads his church to call out and commission missionaries for the work He is developing in this world. Expect Mixed Results (6-12) Openness to God’s Word (7) Openness to God’s Word (7) Opposition to God’s Word (6, 8-11) Opposition to God’s Word (6, 8-11) Obedience to God’s Word (12) Obedience to God’s Word (12) When the gospel is preached, some accept it, and some reject. Sometimes the rejecters become major stumbling blocks Satan places in the path of those trying to understand the truth. When the gospel is preached, some accept it, and some reject. Proclaim a Historical Foundation (13-25) The historical preparation for the coming of the Messiah (14-23) The historical preparation for the coming of the Messiah (14-23) The homiletical preparation for His coming (24-25) The homiletical preparation for His coming (24-25) As the missionaries moved on to Pisidian Antioch, they found opportunity for Paul’s first recorded sermon. It, like Stephen’s, centers on the historical foundation Christianity finds in the Old Testament record of how God dealt with Israel. It, like Stephen’s, centers on the historical foundation Christianity finds in the Old Testament record of how God dealt with Israel.

Offer a Universal Gospel (26-37) God honored the Messiah (26-33): Psalm 2:6-9 God honored the Messiah (26-33): Psalm 2:6-9 God fulfilled in Him the promises given to David (34): Isaiah 55:3 God fulfilled in Him the promises given to David (34): Isaiah 55:3 God did not allow His body to see corruption (35- 37): Psalm 16:10; 1 Kings 2:10 God did not allow His body to see corruption (35- 37): Psalm 16:10; 1 Kings 2:10 As David was Jesse’s son, Jesus is God’s Son, so Paul’s sermon pressed on to crucifixion, burial, resurrection, and eyewitness reports to affirm the truth and meaning of the gospel. As David was Jesse’s son, Jesus is God’s Son, so Paul’s sermon pressed on to crucifixion, burial, resurrection, and eyewitness reports to affirm the truth and meaning of the gospel.

Explain Biblical Forgiveness (38-43) The repenting sinner is forgiven of sin (38) The repenting sinner is forgiven of sin (38) The repenting sinner is declared righteous (39- 41) The repenting sinner is declared righteous (39- 41) The repenting sinner responds favorably to the Word of God (42-43) The repenting sinner responds favorably to the Word of God (42-43) Resurrection not only settles God’s promise, it also sends God’s forgiveness and shows God’s grace. Resurrection not only settles God’s promise, it also sends God’s forgiveness and shows God’s grace.

Move on to Receptive Gentiles (44-52) The unbelieving Jews rejected God (44-46, 50-52) The unbelieving Jews rejected God (44-46, 50-52) God rejected the Jews (46) God rejected the Jews (46) The foretelling of the believing Gentiles (47): Isaiah 49:6 The foretelling of the believing Gentiles (47): Isaiah 49:6 The fulfillment of the believing Gentiles (48-49) The fulfillment of the believing Gentiles (48-49) Whenever the gospel is preached, we should expect a mixed reaction. Some will believe; some will reject and turn away; still others will reject and stir up some kind of opposition. Whenever the gospel is preached, we should expect a mixed reaction.
