Introduction to Painting

2-D vs. 3-D Art  Painting, drawing, and printmaking are considered ______ art, and sculpture is considered ______ art. Painting involves applying a _____________, which is also known as a coloring substance, to a surface. Above is the oil painting “Night Watch”, by Rembrandt van Rijn. To the left is “David”, 1504 by Michelangelo. During the painting unit we will look at 2-D art, and during the next unit, the sculpture unit, we will be looking at 3-D art.

Media  Media is the __________ used to create a work of art. Therefore, Mixed Media is the combination of different types of media to produce art. In 2-D art, there are two types of media: _______ and __________. This charcoal drawing is called “Study for ‘Nude with Hexagonal Quilt’”, 1924 by George Bellows. A “Study for” is basically a rough draft.

Wet Media  There are ________ types of wet media. These types of media are: ________, watercolor, gouache, tempera, acrylic, and _____________.  The paintings we will study in class were primarily oil or fresco paintings.  The painting we will make in class will be made using tempera paints.

Pigment  All wet media contain pigments of colors. This pigment is suspended in a material such as _______, water, egg yolk, or ______________.  The material being used is called the binder because it binds with the pigment to create the paint.  Ex: An oil binder creates an oil paint. Above is a picture of “natural ultramarine pigment” used to make blue colors.

Oil Painting  In an oil painting, the _______ doesn’t change when it is applied. If bright pink is on the brush, bright pink will be on the canvas.  When oil is applied it does not need to be protected, and its _______________. This is why most oil paintings do not have glass in front of them.  Oil painting can show a lot of ________________. On the left is a picture called “The Elevation of the Cross (central part of the triptych)”, by Peter Paul Rubens. This is an oil painting.

Fresco  This is paint that is applied to wet ____________. It is very difficult to do, it dries very ________, and if you make a mistake, you have to re-plaster the wall. Above is Michelangelo’s “The Creation of Adam”, It is a fresco.

Dry Media  There are four types of dry media. They are _______, charcoal, graphite, and pastel.  In class we will make ______________ self- portraits.  A pastel is basically chalk that has been artificially tinted to create a new color. Above is an example of a pastel painting. This one is called “Mother and Child” by Mary Cassatt. She made this painting in 1900.
