NEW NATIONAL CURRICULUM From September 2014 it became statutory for all schools to teach the New National Curriculum Year 2 and Year 6 are still teaching the Old National Curriculum for Reading, Writing, Maths and Science The Curriculum identifies what needs to be taught, but not how to teach it Expectations for each year group are higher than in the previous curriculum

SUBJECTS - ENGLISH Stronger emphasis on vocabulary development, grammar, punctuation and spellings Reading is at the core of the curriculum, a large emphasis being on reading for pleasure Increased focus on handwriting Increased focus on spoken English Literacy is now replaced with English

SUBJECTS - MATHS Times Tables are very important and by age 9 (Year 4) children are expected to know their tables up to 12 x 12 Increased focus on mental arithmetic; calculators introduced later than in the previous curriculum Mathematical reasoning runs throughout the curriculum Numeracy is now replaced with Mathematics

SUBJECTS Science  Strong focus on scientific knowledge and language ICT  Replaced by Computing  Focus on programming rather than operating systems (from age 5)  Internet Safety is paramount

SUBJECTS Design and Technology Setting up children as designers Greater emphasis on cookery KS2 looking at individuals who have shaped our world History Increased focus on British History Taught in chronological order

SUBJECTS Geography Increased focus on maps Location of countries, capitals, cities, mountains and rivers In depth studies of other countries and a region of the British Isles Languages Language will replace Modern Foreign Languages Statutory at KS2 Children expected to grasp basic grammar, read, write and speak the language.

ASSESSMENT Levels no longer exist except for year 2 and year 6 in 2015 Phonics testing will happen in Year 1 and end of Key Stage tests will continue but in a different format The curriculum is designed for children to gain a deeper and broader understanding of the programme of study rather than rush through levels The government has said schools can decide how to assess, but it must not be using levels

ASSESSMENT

SOUTH VIEW ASSESSMENT We have developed a 7 point system for assessing and tracking our children’s progress. 1-Below- working significantly below age-related expectations. 2-WTr (working towards red)-25% of the end of year expectations 3-WTa (working towards amber)-50% of the end of year expectations 4-WTg (working towards green)-75% of the end of year expectations 5-WA (working at)-100% of the end of year expectations-this is the expected standard. 6-Exc (exceeding) children will be given opportunities to deepen their 7-Exc+ (exceeding +) understanding through application across the curriculum. This is called ‘Mastery’ and ‘Depth’.

PARENTS’ EVENINGS For all year groups discussion will be based around the progress your child is making towards meeting the end of year expectations. In Y2 and Y6 levels will be discussed In Y1, Y3, Y4 and Y5 no levels will be given, but instead discussion will be around whether your child is on target to achieve WA (age related) or exceeding (above age related)

HOW YOU CAN HELP AT HOME Tables Reading for pleasure! Your child does not need to read every book on a level. The Class Teacher will move them up when they are ready. However rushing your child through the books might mean that other similar level books will need to be read to ensure they develop the other skills of reading, rather than just word recognition. Regular readers achieve higher at school Homework. This is always linked to learning. Please ensure it is in on time as it has a better impact on your child’s education and allows the teacher to mark it.
