7. Curriculum changes in KS2

English Stronger emphasis on vocabulary development, grammar, punctuation and spelling (for example, the use of commas and apostrophes will be taught in KS1) Reading is at the core of the whole curriculum with a big emphasis on reading for pleasure both at home and at school. Handwriting (not currently assessed under the national curriculum) is expected to be fluent, legible and speedy Spoken English is given greater emphasis, with children being taught debating and presentation skills. Mathematics Simple fractions (1/4 and ½ ) taught from KS1, and by the end of KS2, converting decimal to simple fractions eg 0.375 = 3/8 To know times tables to 12x12 by the age of 9 (Year 4) Calculators not introduced until the end of KS2 to encourage mental arithmetic The ability to solve mathematical problems is now a key skill through all strands of the primary curriculum Children will be taught formal written strategies for long multiplication and division Science Strong focus on science knowledge and language Evolution will be taught in primary schools for the first time Study of scientists and their work History Greater emphasis on British History from Stone Age to 1066 Tudors no longer taught in KS2 Design and Technology( DT) In KS2, children will learn about how key events and individuals in design and technology have shaped the world. Greater emphasis on cookery with a focus on savoury dishes Languages Children will be expected to master basic grammar and accurate pronunciation and to converse, present, read and write in the language PE Strength, flexibility, control and balance Outdoor and adventurous activities Self rescue in water Computing From age five, children will learn to write and test simple programs, and to organise, store and retrieve data From seven, they will be taught to understand computer networks, including the internet Internet safety is a key issue Geography Greater use of atlases and maps Children are expected to know and locate countries, capitals, major cities, mountains and rivers In depth studies of a European, North/South American country and a region of the British Isles Music Understand staff and notation Appreciate a wide range of music Improvise, compose, play and perform Religious Education Still following Northampton Syllabus Art No major changes to objectives

9. How we assess progress and attainment The National Curriculum has changed and with it the way all schools track attainment and progress: Age Related Expectations (ARE) for each year. Band 3= year 3, Band 4 = year 4, etc Each band is broken into steps ’beginning,’ (B) ‘within’ (W) and ‘secure’ (S) Teachers can further break down each step into two, denoted by ‘+’ eg 4W+ Expectation that generally children make 6 steps progress per year Mastery = more in-depth, investigative work Independent work is the biggest indicator of what children can do SATs will still take place in year 6 Moderation – across the federation, with other schools and the Local Authority

Homework in Year 3/4 One learning log per term Spellings weekly homework – handed out on a Friday in preparation for a test the following Thursday Numeracy weekly homework – handed out on a Friday to be returned by the following Wednesday Reading every night or being read to There are additional materials on the school website to support learning in school – and other web based learning materials

12. Homework – promoting independence It is our aim to give our / your children responsibility for both collecting, completing and handing homework in. If there are any problems, please let us know and we will of course make allowances. There are always spare copies in class for lost tasks! Homework Club
