3. Moor Allerton Hall Primary What’s changed in the national curriculum? We have a new curriculum and a new assessment process which all schools nationally are struggling to get to grips with Higher expectations- particularly in English and maths All children are expected to reach the national age related expected level unless they have recognised funding for special needs or are new to English in the last 2 years Much more emphasis on secure knowledge of basic skills e.g. arithmetic and spelling More emphasis on mastering and embedding knowledge not moving on to higher levels

Moor Allerton Hall Primary Changes in English: Greater emphasis on vocabulary development and SPAG : spelling, punctuation and grammar Handwriting ( not previously assessed under the national curriculum) is expected to be fluent, legible and speedy Spoken English has a greater emphasis, with children to be taught debating and presenting skills.debating

Moor Allerton Hall Primary Changes in maths Mental maths is out- arithmetic is in Five-year-olds will be expected to learn to count up to 100 (compared to 20 under the old curriculum) and learn number bonds to 20 (was up to 10) Simple fractions (1/4 and 1/2) will be taught from KS1, and by the end of primary school, children should be able to convert decimal fractions to simple fractions (e.g. 0.375 = 3/8) By the age of nine, children will be expected to know times tables up to 12×12 (was10×10 by the end of primary school) Calculators will not be introduced until near the end of KS2, to encourage mental arithmetic.

As all children are expected to reach ARE our approach has changed: Much more whole class teaching- all children working on the same objective Use the strategy of skill, apply, challenge to get mastery of a concept for all children Regular assessment in lessons – no child wasting a session on the wrong track Catch up groups happening regularly in afternoons Interventions for children will bigger gaps in knowledge Time on embedding not moving on to higher levels or different year groups

New Year Two SATs SPAG Paper 1: a 20-word spelling test Paper 2: a grammar, punctuation and vocabulary test Reading Paper 1 is similar to the old style SATs paper Paper 2 has elements of old L3. This is a longer book to read and children will answer in a booklet All children are expected to take both tests Maths There are two papers: Paper 1: arithmetic Paper 2: mathematical fluency, problem-solving and reasoning Children will not be able to use any resources such as number lines and hundred squares.

24. Moor Allerton Hall Primary How has testing changed in Year 6? Based specifically around the new National Curriculum 2014 objectives. More challenging with higher standards and expectations than previous years Maths - different format 1.Arithmetic test replaces the Mental Maths test, 2.Still two Reasoning Tests however a calculator is not allowed. Reading – same format 1.Different types of questions – more emphasis on vocabulary and meaning Writing – same format 1.Teacher assessed and externally moderated – pupils are marked against a framework and will be assessed at: Working Towards, Working At and Working Above national expectations 2.SPAG is still a separate test paper – similar format

25. Moor Allerton Hall Primary How is school doing in making the big transition to improve standards? Teachers are all teaching the whole class using the new objectives from the national curriculum There are much higher expectations of all children We are working with other schools to moderate -agreeing what ARE looks like and how to interpret the guidance Our targets for Y2 and Y6 are higher- we expect to do much better in the SATS this year The quality of work is already visibly better We have made huge improvements in teaching and marking & feedback strategies We are still working hard
