How does Listerine affect the germination of popcorn seeds We chose this question because we wanted to see if Listerine, which cleans germs, could actually work to grow popcorn seeds. Our independent variable is Listerine. Our Control is water because all seeds need water to grow. We kept the water and sunlight because plants need water and sunlight to survive and have food.

Materials and Methods Materials 2 plastic bags Listerine Water 4 moist paper towels that were soaked 2 in water and 2 in Listerine 10 popcorn seeds. Our growth chamber had 10 popcorn seeds in 2 plastic bags and 4 paper towels.

Materials and Methods Procedure Soak 10 popcorn seeds in water for a day. Place 4 paper towels in 2 plastic bags. Place popcorn on the paper towels. Pour Listerine on one of the paper towels and water on the other. Water everyday. Watch them GERMINATE ! Take observations of the data. Compare the plants. Make sure paper towels stay moist.

Data Height (cm) Dates

Result and Conclusion Result The seeds in the plain water grew a lot with the average growth of 2.63cm on October 14, 9.48cm on October 18, 11.76cm on October 20, and 15.54cm on October 25. Sadly the seeds in the Listerine didn’t grow at all. Conclusion We didn’t have any problems but we did find out that putting popcorn seeds in Listerine will kill it. We think it died because Listerine is made to kill germs, so it probably killed the popcorn seeds.
