“Does soil affect plant germination?” By: Clara Rosario, Bryan Garrido and Yessica

Prediction Prediction: Prediction: Our prediction / hypothesis was that the seeds without soil wouldn’t germinate as quickly as the seeds with soil. We predicted this because based on what we knew from how to plant seeds, the three main things you use is soil, water and sunlight and we figured if I didn’t have soil it was going to grow slower.

Materials Experiment seeds with soil 5 barley seeds 5 barley seeds 1 paper towel 1 paper towel Water Water Soil Soil Zip lock bag Zip lock bag Experiment seeds no soil 5 barley seeds 5 barley seeds 1 paper towel 1 paper towel Water Water Soil Soil Zip lock bag Zip lock bag

Dependent variable Our dependent variable in our scientific experiment is plant germination (plant growth)

Independent variable Our independent variable is the soil (what’s being measured)

Step-by-step First we came up with our experimental question. First we came up with our experimental question. Then we got our materials which was 2 zip lock bags for each experiment Then we got our materials which was 2 zip lock bags for each experiment we got 5 barley seeds for each experiment we got 5 barley seeds for each experiment Two paper towels one for each experiment Two paper towels one for each experiment A bit of Soil A bit of Soil Then we wet both paper towels, so that both the paper towels are be wet Then we wet both paper towels, so that both the paper towels are be wet Then we opened the paper towels Then we opened the paper towels Placed both of them separate down on the table Placed both of them separate down on the table Took 5 of the barley seeds and put them in one paper towel Took 5 of the barley seeds and put them in one paper towel Then we took the other 5 barley seeds and placed them in the other paper towel Then we took the other 5 barley seeds and placed them in the other paper towel We took soil and only placed a certain amount in one of the paper towels to the point where it covered the seeds We took soil and only placed a certain amount in one of the paper towels to the point where it covered the seeds Then we folded closed in half both paper towels Then we folded closed in half both paper towels Took both zip lock bags Took both zip lock bags Opened one of them and put one of the paper towels Opened one of them and put one of the paper towels Then opened the other zip lock bag Then opened the other zip lock bag And placed the paper towel in the zip lock bag folded And placed the paper towel in the zip lock bag folded We placed those to paper bags in the zip lock bags making sure that none of the seeds came out from none of the bags We placed those to paper bags in the zip lock bags making sure that none of the seeds came out from none of the bags We closed the bags We closed the bags Took both bags and placed them in the window Took both bags and placed them in the window

Conclusion Conclusion: Conclusion: Our prediction was that the seed with no soil but only water and sunlight will germinate slower then the seeds that had soil. Based on our results our hypothesis was supported because the seeds with no soil germinated a lot slower then the seeds with soil. This means that in conclusion seeds need soil to germinate.
