1 Bean seed germination

2 1. Observe 2 beans that are dry. 1Draw them true size.
2 Measure the mass, length and width. Record general observations about the beans. Soak several beans in water over night.

3 On your lab paper: 1. Day 1: true size.2 pts
2. Day 1: measurements and observations : mass, length, width and observations 4pts

4 2. Observe the 2 beans and 3draw the true size
2. Observe the 2 beans and 3draw the true size. Compare to the dry beans and record general observations. 4 Measure the mass, length and width after soaking. Peel off the seed coat and open one bean. Look at it under the dissecting scope. 5Draw a diagram of it on 20X power. 6 What happened to the bean after soaking it in water? Use quantitative and qualitative descriptions! 3. Roll the beans in paper toweling that is moist. Place this in a cup and cover it with a plastic bag. Let the beans germinate for several days.

5 On your lab paper add to day one:
3. Day 2: true size 2 pts 4. Day 2: measurements and observations : mass, length, width and observations 4pts 5. Day 2: Draw a diagram of it on 20X power. 2 pts 6. Day 2: what happened to the bean? 3pt

6 7Draw a true size diagram of a bean on day 5 of the germination process. 8Label the parts using the diagram in the book on page 676 or 679. (Record the actual day of germination you use as it may vary)

7 4. Select one part to observe under the dissecting scope
4. Select one part to observe under the dissecting scope. Look at it and 9draw a diagram. Make sure to label the power and label what part of the bean you selected to draw. Put the beans back in paper toweling and let then continue to grow for another 2 days 5. Remove a bean and 10draw it true size. This will be around day 7. Replace the remaining beans in the paper toweling to continue to grow.

8 6. 11Write a description of the process that the beans have been going through from day one. Use the book to help you use the proper terminology for the germination of a bean seed. 7. Plant the remaining sprouts in the cup with soil. Place them in an area where they will receive light. 8. 12How could you do an experiment to show phototropism? 9. Using a clear cup, you can see the roots growth. 13What can be observed about the direction of the root’s growth? 14What type of tropism is this called?

9 5. Day 2: Draw a diagram of it on 20X power. 2 pts
