Creating Web Pages in Word

Sharing Office Files Online Many Web pages are created using the HTML programming language. Web page editors are software programs designed to generate HTML code. A single file Web page is one file that contains the HTML document along with all the supporting files. A filtered Web page is an HTML document with the Office-related tags removed.

Creating Web Pages in Word Click Web page in the New section in the New Document task pane. Click File on the menu bar, and then click Save As Web Page. In the Save as type list, select Web page. Select a location, file name, and page title, and click the Save button. Fall 2007 ©

The Save As Dialog Box

Typing the Text of the Home Page In the Microsoft Word window, design your Web page just as you would a normal Word document. By default, web pages created with Word have simple white backgrounds and black text. You can manually transform the look of any aspect of the Web page, or you can apply a theme. A theme is a designed collection of formatting options that include colors, graphics, and background images. To access the Theme dialog box, select Theme from the Format menu.

Background Images In addition to changing the color or adding a theme, you can also insert a background image. Background images are repeated or tiled to fill the screen display. When choosing combinations of colors or background images for your web page, there are a few things you should consider: Readability – Choose complimentary colors or background images that do not interfere with the text on your page. Aesthetics – Create attractive layouts and color combinations that convey who you are and make visitors to you page want to return. ADA Issues – Some of the visitors to your web site may have difficulty seeing certain colors such as red and green. So keep this in mind as you are designing your page. Printing – If visitors might want to print your page dark backgrounds and light text may not print well.

Adding Background Images If it is not already, save a copy of the image you want to use on your web site onto your computer. To insert it as a background image: Click Format from the Menu Bar and then Select Background and then Fill Effects. You will see a tabbed display of fill effect options, click the Picture tab, then Select Picture

Including Pictures A way to personalize your website or make it come alive is to add a picture that you have created yourself. Place the cursor wherever you want to insert the image. Then click Insert on the menu bar, select Picture, and the select From File. Choose the image and click Insert.

Adding Animated Graphics You can also add animated graphics to your website. One website where you can find many animated graphics is m-htm/anim.htm m-htm/anim.htm Save your desired image onto your computer and the insert the images into your webpage the same way as other pictures. They will not be animated in Word, only when viewing in a web browser.

Inserting Hyperlinks Hyperlinks, or links, provide an easy way to navigate within and between Web pages. You can link to: An existing file or Web page A place in the same document An address Insert a hyperlink by clicking the Insert Hyperlink button on the Standard toolbar.

Insert Hyperlink dialog box

Previewing Web Pages in a Browser Before you publish Web pages for others to view, you should preview them in a Web browser to ensure that the pages look like you expect them to. Not all browsers display Web pages in the same way. There are several ways to preview Web pages in a browser: Web Page Preview command on the File menu Using the Web toolbar Use the Open command from the File menu in your browser
