Creative Industries By Jenny Johnston

What is the creative industry? The Uk Government has a Department called the DCMS which is Culture, Media and sport. Which has 13 categories. These 13 categories have individual creativity, skills and talent. They have potential for wealth and job creation  Advertising  Architecture  Art and antiques  Computer games  Crafts  Design  Designer fashion  Film and video  Music  Performing arts  Publishing  Software  TV and radio.

How is the sector important to the Uk economy? The creative Industries are very important to the Uk economy as it has provided around two million jobs in the whole Uk and is still growing. The employment in the sector has grown the rate of the economy double time (The creative industries sector in Scotland supports over 60,000 jobs and contributes £5 billion to our economy.)

What have been the major developments effecting the sector over the last ten years? The creative industries have gotten more important, more wanted and even more popular and also technology has improved in the last ten years, there has been a 39% increase in the number of businesses within the UK cultural and creative sectors, with over 150,000 companies employing almost two million people.

How is it different from the cultural industries sector? The difference between the cultural industries and the creative is that the cultural industries focus more on tourism and heritage, museums and libraries, sports and outdoor activities.

What is meant by synergy within the creative industries? Synergy within the creative industries means when one specific area of the sector can be added with another to create something more better, basically they are using each other to advertise themselves. Example: A film or a video game could have a soundtrack or the video game can be based on a movie.

What are the key issues for the candidates chosen vocational area in this sector? I have picked game designer to right about, the key issues would be trying to get funding, as it can be very expensive for the computer programmes and resources to make the computer and video games. Another problem is copyright, having a complete different game to another, there are so many games that it would be hard to get something different. Also, mobile games and apps.
