RIGEL: an Rpc-like sIgnals GEnerator for Laboratory testing N.Montes P.Amado, P.Fonte, J.A.Garzón, A.Gil University of Santiago de Compostela -Spain- labCAF

8th Workshop on RPC and Related Detectors Noelia Montes Alonso Outline Motivations What does RIGEL give us? Working diagram MASTER board Simple CHANNEL board Final signal Final setup Power consumption Summary

8th Workshop on RPC and Related Detectors Noelia Montes Alonso Motivations Need of an RPC simulator providing gas avalanche-like pulses for electronics testing and crosstalk studies with the RPC detector Real detector simulator giving pulses pseudo-randomly in time and different heights Small size and simple electronic device Lower price than standard pulse generators

8th Workshop on RPC and Related Detectors Noelia Montes Alonso What does RIGEL give us? Four different output RPC-like pulses: Negative or Positive polarity Different heights Variable distribution in time width Pulse characteristics: Minimum time interval of ~3ns Minimun width of ~1ns Fix rise time of ~400ps Amplitude range from 0 to 2V

8th Workshop on RPC and Related Detectors Noelia Montes Alonso Working Diagram

8th Workshop on RPC and Related Detectors Noelia Montes Alonso MASTER board

8th Workshop on RPC and Related Detectors Noelia Montes Alonso Simple CHANNEL board

8th Workshop on RPC and Related Detectors Noelia Montes Alonso Final Signal Positive Width: 2ns Rise time: 400ps Amplitude: 800mV

8th Workshop on RPC and Related Detectors Noelia Montes Alonso W: 18 cm. L: 30 cm. H: 14 cm. Final Setup Master 4 Channels Power Supply

8th Workshop on RPC and Related Detectors Noelia Montes Alonso Power Consumption Master: 0.8W Channel: 1.18W Total: 0.8+(4 1.18)=5.52W Total Cost Pasive Components: ~50€ Active Components: ~500€ Board, Regulators and Box: ~150€ Total Cost: ~700€ It’s not optimized yet!

8th Workshop on RPC and Related Detectors Noelia Montes Alonso Summary A device producing RPC-like pulses is in production It will generate up to four parallel narrow, pseudo-randomly and variable in amplitude pulses It will be very useful for FEE testing and crosstalk studies
