Situation and Design Brief Situation: The government of Jakarta has asked a local construction company to build a bridge than will span a small river in East Java. This bridge will need to support cars, lorries and pedestrians and it will shorten the traveling time between the two villages on opposite sides of the river. They have commissioned 5 teams of engineers to design a scale model that will then be made full size. These teams will be competing for the contract and the strongest design will win the design contract. Design Brief Working in teams of 4 or 5, design and make a model bridge using only: Wooden skewers (x 50 per group) card for decking (90cm x 10cm x 2mm) x 2 String Hot glue The bridge should be no more than 10cm wide, 50 cm long and 60cm high. Some parts of the bridge can hang below the road surface level, but cannot be fixed to the sides You do not have to use all of the material provided. The winning design will be the strongest bridge. Note : There is no restriction on your actual design, but it should incorporate the best features of truss/beam, suspension, arched and cantilever bridges that you have researched.

Make On the next two pages, paste some photographs that illustrate the stages that you went through as you were making your model bridge. Alongside each image, explain what was taking place. I drew a template of my bridge design showing triangulation. It is full size so it fits the span. 1 2 I selected Art straws and marked them for length against my template The straws were positioned on Low-Tac tape so they didn’t move I used a Hot glue gun to secure the joints when they were all in place
