2 Manufacturing systems.
1 Definition: Manufacturing systems are a method of organising a production line. Here is an example of a production line. 2 Manufacturing systems aim to be efficient. Efficient means making something with the least waste of time, effort, material and people resources. Here are some examples on efficiency. Only using one person to use the laser cutter rather than two. (People resources) Using a Hegner saw rather than a Tenon saw. (Effort) Not wasting material. (Material)

3 We will now discuss the main features of a manufacturing system and how we can make it efficient.

1. Suggest two other features that would help improve the efficiency of a manufacturing system. Example: Systems for deposing waste. Suggestion one: Suggestion two: 2. Describe how each of the features below should work in order for a system to run smoothly and efficiently.

5 There are two ways to show how a product will be made and you may be asked to do either of these.

3 The layout of the production line is often drawn. It is important extremely important to draw the production line as it can show how to reduce time loss, speed up manufacturing, reduce travelling and implement quality control checks.

4 This is an example of how to layout a manufacturing systems drawing. The example is for creating a photo frame by 8 people. The layout is mainly concerned about how to product moves about the workshop and how many people are working at each workstation. Stock of all materials Waste bin. Table one Mark out Pine. Use pencil, rule and mitre square. Three people. QC check if the piece of wood has been sanded to the line. Table three QC check if measurements are right. Glue the four pieces together using clamps. Two people. Neat drawing. Clear flow with arrows. You can see all the workers. Workers are not over or under worked. Each process is clearly labelled. Quality checks are in place. Table two Cut Pine. Use tenon saw and bench hook. One person. QC use tri square to check if they are at 90 degrees. Table four QC check if only the waste area has been cut. Sand off glue and use varnish to finish. One person. Complete products. Belt sander Sand Pine on belt sander using a 45 degree jig. One person. QC any extra varnish must be wiped off. One person.

6 The manufacturing layout needs to be supported by a manufacturing flow diagram. The flow diagram states exactly how a product is made. It does not state how many people need to complete a task or where in the workshop it should be completed. Key for manufacturing symbols. Start Use this at the beginning of the process and end. ISO is the world’s leading developer of International Standards. ISO standards specify the requirements for state-of-the-art products, services, processes, materials and systems. ISO standards are designed to be implemented worldwide.

14 British Standards Institute
BSI devises tests that products or components have to meet. It awards the Kitemark to those products that meet the standards.

15 Conformité Europeenne
Simply means that the product has been approved for sale in the European Union. Meets basic requirements but may not have been tested against specific criteria The letters 'CE' on a product are the manufacturer's claim that the product meets the requirements of all relevant European Directives.

16 Customer confidence Trade associations provide clear guidance for manufacturers and designers and undertake their own testing Along with other forms of certification they provide customers with a degree of confidence and an assurance that they are getting a quality product
