Mrs. Gilstrap's Classroom Management Plan Kristen Gilstrap EDUC 5323 November 8, 2014

Management Philosophy As a kindergarten teacher, I want my children’s first year of school to be their best year. Environment that makes students feel: safe, confident, loved. I do not mind noise because my lessons involve plenty of partner and group work. Teach my students to be independent leaders Demonstrate Stephen Covey’s “Seven Habits of Happy Kids”: be proactive begin with the end in mind put first things first think win-win listen to others before talking Synergize sharpen the saw

Importance of a Classroom Management Plan Harry Wong’s The First Days of School Have a script and a plan Playbook for teaching How I want students to come in What do with materials Emergency actions Logical rules and consequences More confident, less Use and modify the same plan each year. Instructional planning=direct correlation with classroom management plan. Instructional plans must be just as detailed and intentional to ensure no loss of instructional time and high student engagement

Classroom Setting Liberty Elementary 20 kindergarten students 10 girls, 10 boys. 19 white, 1 African American 11 free lunch, 1 reduced lunch status, 8 regular lunch 8 on grade level, 4 above grade level, 1 gifted 2 kindergarten repeaters, 7 RTI, 6 speech, 1 hearing

Since I teach in a leadership-driven school, I base my school rules on the acronym LEAD:

Consequences

Daily Routines and Protocols Getting Attention of the Class Class Leader Whole Brain Strategies Morning Routine Lining Up Class Restroom Breaks Using the Class Restroom Lunch Procedures When Your Pencil Breaks Early Finishers Finished Papers When Someone Knocks on the Door or the Phone Rings When There is a Drill or Emergency End of the Day Procedures

Physical Arrangement of Classroom

Parent Involvement Volunteer-training opportunities Weekly newsletters Daily Organizational Guide (DOG) folders Conferences Phone calls Positive notes School-wide: Bravo Breakfast, parenting workshops, Title 1 reading and math nights, open house

Classroom management is an area in which teachers must never become complacent and continually search for current strategies that are effective for their unique students.
