EDUCATION AND CHANGE KENITA SPINKS EDU 639

LEARNING IN EDU 639 We live in a very diverse world and everyone should be treated the same no matter their race, religion, or financial situation.

HEGEMONY EXIST? I do believe that hegemony still exist in our schools. I know that the high school my son attends, it exists there. I think they are a big distraction for the other students that are there to learn. The teachers have to take time out of teaching the students that are there to learn to get on to the kids that are just wasting time. They try to make it look cool that they are getting in trouble. Most of these kids do not graduate; they are just waiting around until they can drop out. It is really sad.

VIDEOS TO LEARN FROM I really enjoyed the videos. I found them all to be very interesting. I believe that where children live and they type of environment that surrounds them can affect test scores and academic performance. I think the schools that are located in places that seem to be run down and not thriving are the ones that seem to not be doing so well. It is really sad because those students could have the potential but they do not really have the support that they need to be better students. I also think that children in poor communities suffer because they may not get the rest they need or the food they need to be able to focus in class. It is harder to find teachers that are willing to go to these schools and stick around to help these students get good test scores or achieve academic success. All children could have the potential but without someone to be there to support them and teach them then test scores will continue to be low. Teacher turnover seem to be low in these areas because no one wants to be seem as a failure and some teachers may find it hard to teach students that some think are not teachable. I think all children can be taught they just need the right tools

RACISM VIDEOS The first video was very informative and it taught a lot about the history of racism. I found many facts and things that I am not sure that I never. I did not know they killed so many just because. Racial prejudice or any invidiousness is wrong and unethical. I believe that it is wrong to mistreat a person because of their race, sex, class or education. I think we are all created for a reason and we are exactly the way we are supposed to be. No one can choose their race, sex class so it would be wrong to judge them for that.

MORE RACISM I did know that schools in different areas had better programs and higher graduation rates as well as more students that will attend college. I do not think I was aware what some students have to do just to get to school. The young man had to change buses a few times to get to school and then go through metal detectors. Also his programs of study just seemed basic compare to the other young man. That young man got to school early just because e an everyone at that school seemed to love school and learning. They also seemed to have a higher program of study.

GAY AND LESBIAN BOOKS IN SCHOOL? After I read the article, I read some of the comments below to see if other people feel the same way I do. I do not think that those books should be on any reading list in any schools. As a parent myself, I would want to teach about gay and lesbian myself. It is something that should be talked about and read at home. If children cannot read the BIBLE in schools, I defiantly do not think they should be reading about gays and lesbians. It may be offensive to some students that that those types of books are on the list and it also can offend parents. Andersen, K. (2013). California dept. of education adds dozens of gay, transgender titles to recommended reading list. LifeSiteNews.com. Retrieved from gay-transgender-titles-to-recoCalifornia dept. of education adds dozens of gay, transgender titles to recommended reading list.

MORE GAY AND LESBIAN BOOKS?. There can be a lot of backlash from adding these types of books to the reading list. I think it would be best if controversial books be left off of the school reading list. If the students want to read these types of books it should be on their own time. It may seem that the schools are teaching the kids about sex and sexual orientation and clearly the parents feels like that should not be done at school. The last sentence of the article may a very good point “Not everyone is comfortable with the updated recommendations (Andersen)”. I would be one of those people.

PAULO FREIRE Paulo Freire love for the people, he knows it's important to be tolerant of other people and it’s not naive to be tolerant you don't have to lose your personality because you're tired of the other people. He also felt like it was an ethical duty in historical duty and a political doing to be tolerant of the other people. He also believed that change was difficult but it was possible. Paulo felt like the radical elements of democracy is worth struggling for and that critical education is a basic element for social change

MYLES HORTON Horton believes in people's ability to learn and that you learn how people learn and help them. He also believed that in order to have social change you have to be willing to change it. TREATING ALL STUDENTS THE SAME I choose to discuss ADD or ADHD because it was personal to me. ADHD is a chemical imbalance. There are symptoms of ADHD and they can be hard to identify sometimes because all children may act these ways at times. Symptoms that may be noticed are, having trouble paying attention, failing to finish a task, talks a lot, and may find it hard to stay in their seats. Most children show some of these symptoms at times, so it is really hard to tell if a child has ADD.

ADHD Parents and teachers need to communicate a lot and be on the same page for the student to thrive. My son was diagnosed with ADD when he was 10. I was very active in his education and stayed in contact with his teachers. He was on medication so I made sure to ask the teachers what they thought worked and what didn't. We all had to work together.

GRANT PROPOSAL I really had a lot of fun with writing grant. It was my first time and I am glad I got this experience. Thank you some much to my classmate and Professor Goss.
