European Peasant Fashion During The Medieval Times

Political Influence on Fashion During the Medieval era there was a hierarchy called the feudal system this acted as a form of government for those living during this time period. It ranked people in order of status and this would determine what outfit was worn. Usually peasants couldn’t afford quality attire, and since they fell into the bottom category of the hierarchy, they were deemed to wear labourer clothing. A peasant would often be working a dirty job therefore wouldn’t want to dress extremely nice.

Peasant Headwear Fieldworkers wore straw hats A coif was worn during messy jobs Butchers and bakers wore kerchiefs Blacksmiths wore caps made out of linen or felt Women wore veils with wimples Both men and women wore hoods, sometimes attached to capes Social status was often associated with headwear

Peasant Upper Body Wear The main article of clothing worn by a European peasant was the tunic. Essentially one piece of fabric most commonly hemp or wool with spaces cut out for the neck and arms. Tunics usually came down to around the thigh and were typically sleeveless sometimes with slits along the sides for extra mobility. Women’s tunics often went down to the mid-calf. Colors of tunics range from blue, red, green to a standard beige/brown, theses colors were cheap and faded faster then more expensive dyes. A Cape would have also been worn, more commonly to protect one self from injury during work or during colder or rainier weather. A cape would sometimes have a hood.

Peasant Footwear In warmer weather a peasant may go barefoot. During colder seasons or when working a peasant would wear simple shoes made of leather, either with wooden or thick leather soles. Soles with curved tips would indicate being of the working class

Peasant Undergarment Peasants undergarments consisted of a shift more commonly used by women which was similar to a tunic but had a lower hemline and was sometimes worn to bed during colder seasons. Men wore loincloths or underpants called braies and hose as socks while women wore stockings. Expensive undergarments were made of linen, cheaper ones were made of hemp.
