5 Significance of the Toga
Toga Virilis : Off-white color worn by adult male citizens Toga Pratexta : Off-white toga with a purple border which was worn by magistrates Toga Pulla : Dark colored worn during periods of mourning Toga Candida : White worn by candidates for office Toga Picta : Purple toga embroidered with gold for state occasions

6 TUNIC Basic item of male dress
Made of two pieces of wool sewn together at the sides and shoulders and belted Working men wore the same type of tunic, but it was usually darker and left one shoulder free for better movement Foreigners could not appear in public wearing a tunic Purple strip on the tunic was called a clavus and showed membership to an order: Latus Clavus denoted a senator Dalmatica was the richest form of the tunic

Lacerna : Worn by middle class; Originally a military cloak Paenula : Used as protection against bad weather Laena : Very thick cloak made of very heavy material Paludamentum : Red cloak which was worn only by the commander in chief The poor wore short, dark laena, where the wealthy would wear a brightly colored one Cucullus : Hood sewn onto the cloak

9 Footwear – Generally regarded as for indoor use
Calceus : Sandal-like shoe which was strapped to the foot (Mainly for indoors) Soleae : Shoe which completely enclosed the foot (Much more modern shoe) Soleae were only used with the toga Made in various colors and materials depending on the social class Most common material was leather Colored shoes identified a senator Women’s shoes were usually brightly colored

10 Grooming for Men Mostly clean-shaven
However, when Emperor Hadrian was in power, he introduced the beard After his time ended, they went back to being clean-shaven Hair pieces, wigs, hair lotions, and dyes were common to the Roman men and women

11 Grooming for Women Gather their hair in a bun at the back of the neck
Coil it into a knot at the top of the head Dye their hair, usually golden-red, and use false hair pieces to make their hair longer and thicker Wear wooden hair sticks in their hair which could have been used to comb the hair Married women: Keep tied up in ribbons on the top of the head

12 Jewelry for Men Children had to wear a bulla (Amulet)
Wear it until reaching their manhood, which was around the age of 16 Bulla would protect against evil Male citizens were allowed only one item of jewelry – A personalized signet ring used to make an impression in sealing wax in order to authorize documents Only one ring worn by the males showed good manners

13 Jewelry for Women Bulla was to be worn until they married
Loved necklaces, pins, earrings, bracelets, and friendship rings Pearls were the favorite
