Part II Tradition: Holidays and Celebrations

Exploring Tradition As a class, we have defined traditions as: things that are passed down from one generation to the next. One easy way to look at traditions is to look at holidays and celebrations. Take a moment and make a list of all the holidays and celebrations we have in New Brunswick.

Major Canadian Holidays Labour Day Thanksgiving Halloween Remembrance Day Christmas New Year’s Valentine’s Day St. Patrick’s Day Easter Victoria Day Canada Day New Brunswick Day Mr. Robinson’s Birthday

Local Celebrations/Festivals Dragon Days (formally Family Fun Days) International Festival Chocolate Festival Festival by the Sea

Why?? We have listed numerous festival and celebrations that we take part in as New Brunswickers, but why are these the ones we have chosen to celebrate? Let’s take a closer look at one of them…

Labour Day

There was a time… When working conditions weren’t quite so safe or fair for workers…

So workers got together…

…and formed unions. The workers together, as unions, could fight against unsafe working conditions, unfair pay, unfair working hours, lack of benefits, etc. So...

Now… People can work without fear of injury or unfair treatment, or else… they’ll bring in the union!

So that’s why… We celebrate Labour Day!

Now your turn… Class Assignment- you MUST: Pick a Canadian holiday or celebration to explore. Research the history of the holiday/celebration Be prepared to: Create a short essay or Powerpoint presentation that explains the history of your chosen holiday to present to the class.

Part III So then… What is our culture??

Gather with family and friends to celebrate the fascinating cultures and numerous wonders of the world around you through dazzling shows, interactive experiences and amazing attractions. Marvel at the power of the human imagination to set the spirits soaring.

Holidays Around The World Experience the joy and magic of the holidays through the celebrations, customs and characters of different countries and diverse cultures from around the world. AT…

That’s right – the Epcot Centre. - A place where CULTURES from around the world are showcased.

Did You Know… Epcot has a Canadian Culture Pavillion. What if Disney hired you to create Atlantic Canada’s portion of the Canadian Pavillion at Epcot? What would it look like? What things would you include? Now’s your chance…

Your Task In groups of five today, name five different displays you would create to represent Atlantic Canadian culture. Each group member will then pick one of the displays to explore further. For each display you must have: –A display title –A one half page description of the display and why it is an important part of Atlantic Canadian culture –A draft of the display (drawing, model, or digital format, etc.) –Remember to pay close attention to the grading rubric!
