“ Women of the Renaissance Era ” By: Maisie Crismon HST 102: History of Western Civilization

Renaissance Era The definition of the Renaissance Era is the rebirth of culture, including art, literature, and learning, in Europe. The time frame of the Renaissance Era was from the early fourteenth century through the seventeenth century. During this time there were many advancements for men but very few were available to women.

Expectations Women were not looked upon favorably. Women usually married very young. Women were often referred to as children in their marriage. Women ’ s duties were to rear the children and take care of the daily chores. Household finances were not discussed with women. Women did not give their husband council.

“ The book of Deeds of Arms and Chivalry ” by Christine de Pisan Christine was an author during the Renaissance Era of a book about war. She was an author when most women did not even know how to read. Christine discusses the duties of war and how to be prepared. Christine speaks of the Greek god Athena, she is the God of wisdom and military victory, and her importance during war time.

Joan of Arc Joan believed she was on a mission from God to lead the French army to victory over England. Joan disguised herself as a man in order to carry out her mission. Joan was tried for witchcraft and heresy and burned at the stake because of her beliefs and actions.

Conclusion In conclusion I found that the Renaissance Era did not show favor to women. There are examples of women who stood out and tried to make a difference but still had difficulties doing so, such as Joan of Arc and author Christien de Pisan. They both had information to contribute to society but because of their gender they were not recognized for it.
