WHAT IS A PROGRESSIVE The progressive movement used government to institute reforms for problems created by industrialization. Causes of the Progressive Movement Excesses of the Gilded Age – Income disparity – Practice of robber barons Working conditions for labor – Dangerous working conditions – Child Labor – Long hours – Company towns – Employment of women

Goals of Progressive Movement Government controlled by the people Guaranteed economic opportunities through government regulation Elimination of social injustices

Open Door Policy John Hay proposed a policy that would give all nations equal trading rights in China. Urged all foreigners in China to obey Chinese law, observe fair competition.

Dollar Diplomacy President Taft urged all American banks and businesses to invest in LA. He promised that the United States would step in if unrest threatened their investments.
