SRE in Upper School 8 th – 12 th June 2015

The National Curriculum framework document states that: ‘All schools should make provision for personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE), drawing on good practice.’ Along with the National Curriculum framework, the DfE also published a guidance document on PSHE education, which states that the subject is:guidance document on PSHE education ‘An important and necessary part of all pupils’ education’ It goes on to note that: ‘Schools should seek to use PSHE education to build, where appropriate, on the statutory content already outlined in the national curriculum, the basic school curriculum and in statutory guidance on: drug education, financial education, sex and relationship education (SRE) and the importance of physical activity and diet for a healthy lifestyle.’

Teaching SRE It is essential that we help pupils develop confidence in talking, listening and thinking about sex and relationships. Therefore: Ground rules will be set to create a safe environment for all. The Question Box.

Changing Me Overview – Year 5

Year 5 - Lesson 1 Self-Image and Body-Image Ground Rules. Be aware of my own self image and how my body image fits into that. Know how to develop my own self esteem. Celebrities – good or bad role models? Question Box.

Year 5 - Lesson 2 Puberty for Girls Ground rules. Explain how a girl’s body changes during puberty and understand the importance of looking after my self physically and emotionally. Understand that puberty is a natural process that happens to everybody and that it will be OK for me. Discuss menstruation worries. What are the ingredients for making a baby? Question box.

Year 5 – Lesson 3 Puberty for Boys Ground rules. Describe how boys’ and girls’ bodies change during puberty. Express how I feel about the changes that will happen to me during puberty. Question box.

Year 5 – Lesson 4 Conception Ground rules. Understand that sexual intercourse can lead to conception and that is how babies are usually made. Understand that some people need IVF to help them have a baby. Appreciate how amazing it is that human bodies can reproduce in these ways. Discuss the different types of relationships that may already have and may have in the future – family, friends, boyfriend, girlfriend etc… When to have sex? Question box.

Year 5 – Lesson 5 Looking Ahead Ground Rules. Identify what I am looking forward to about becoming a teenager and understand this brings growing responsibilities – discuss the age of consent. Be confident that I can cope with the changes that growing up will bring. Question Box.

Year 5 – Lesson 6 Looking Ahead to Year 6 Covered later this term with the help of two year 6 children.

Year 6 – Lesson 3 Girl Talk/Boy Talk Ground rules. Ask the questions I need answered about changes during puberty. Reflect on how I feel about asking the questions and about the answers I receive. Question box.

Year 6 – Lesson 4 Circles of Change Ground rules. Describe how a baby develops from conception through the nine months of pregnancy and how it is born. Recognise how I feel when I reflect on the development and birth of a baby. Question box.

Year 6 – Lesson 5 Attraction Ground rules. Understand how being physically attracted to someone changes the nature of the relationship. Express how I feel about the growing independence of becoming a teenager and am confident that I can cope with this. Question box.

Year 6 – Lesson 6 Looking Ahead Transition to secondary school – this will be done throughout the second half of the summer term.
