Reading A mix of informational and fictional texts of different genres. Text Based Questions will be used often to access student understanding where students will prove their answers from evidence in the text. To do this students will practice Close Reading. Close Reading Strategies: a careful and purposeful re- reading of the text to search for purpose, structure, words, ideas, and flow of the text.

Vocabulary Vocabulary will come from all subject areas. In ELA vocabulary words may be somewhat individualized as students will be annotating what they read and searching for new vocabulary. Tier 2 words will be studied: Words that appear with high frequency, across a variety of domains, and are crucial when using mature, academic language (coincidence, reluctant, analysis). instruction-teaching-tips-rebecca-alber instruction-teaching-tips-rebecca-alber Prefixes, root words, suffixes, analogies, and words in context will be studied.

6 + 1 Traits of Writing will be used along with scales and rubrics to teach, peer edit, self edit, and score writing. Types of writing: Literary Responses Argumentative/Opinion Narrative Expository/Informational Writing
