How can e-portfolios Support 21 st Century Learning?

Aim of the Project Introduce e-portfolios to actively enhance the HE student’s learning experience. ITT learners involved in the project The process linked to ITT programme ITT learners initial views and reflections – Scrolling PP Course Team views and focus Current Learners e-portfolio views – Video Clip E-portfolio ITT professional future

What have we done? Certificate in Education/PGCE Introduce ePet portfolio to following students: –36 first year trainee teachers –20 second year trainee teachers Encourage ePet as a reflective tool for: –Learning Autobiography (Blog) –Professional Development File Log of teaching hours Tutorial records Personal action planning

The Process

Initial Learner Views (33/56) How regularly do you think that you will use the e- Portfolio/PDP system? Every few days9% Weekly52% Fortnightly13% Don't know26% Who of these would you grant access to? Personal Tutor 96% Other teaching staff 39% Mentor 70% Selected Student colleagues 70% Employers 13%

Initial Learner Views How do you think the e-Portfolio/PDP process can help you achieve your learning goals? I can reflect on my practice and maybe learn from others who are posting their blogs too. This is completely out of my comfort zone and new to me, so the use of this system will hopefully improve my IT skills. Help better organisation of files. Cross reference against skills and outcomes.

Initial Learner Views I think it will help me organise and structure myself to ensure that I complete any work I need to and achieve the goal of passing this qualification. It will also be a quick reference point for me to see where I am and what I need to still complete. It allows you to capture issues that will effect your development in a real time basis. For example a particular lesson that stimulated thought or an experience within ones individual teaching. This will allow the individual to record and then reflect on the situation. Provide a centralised place to collect evidence of learning. Give me a forum to explore my own learning and exchange ideas and experiences with others. Support mechanism. Ownership & Target Setting Reflective Practice

Initial Learner Views Do you have any concerns about using electronic portfolios/PDP's which lead you to think that they might not be successful for you? I am not very confident with ICT and that is my major concern as if it is too complicated I will not want to use it as it becomes too stressful. Concerned on security matters in terms of internet security if personal details are required can they be accessed? The only concern I have is if the system looses all of the work I have saved I may not have a paper based back up.

Encouraged Regular Reflections Initial Reflections

Reflected on job role

Reflected on my classroom activities

Reflected on personal development

Reflected on their teaching practices

Course Team Views Needs to be ‘Fit for Purpose’ as much as possible before introducing it to the learners – Staff to be fully trained and confident. Ensure clear links between technology and programme of study – is it adding value or just time consuming? On reflection the potential for further developments to support a more student-lead virtual learning environment is an exciting prospect.

Course Team Focus A more personalised e-portfolio which integrates with the Professional Standards for teacher education Build in time to the Cert Ed/PGCE programme to develop learners’ confidence to use the technology, promoting ownership of their learning and encouraging peer supportive networks. Collate and review learners’ feedback regularly to support relevant modifications to the technology, accommodating the different learning needs.
