Welcome to Olympia High School Welcome to Olympia High School Home of the Oly Way… GO BEARS! Aligning your Child's Interests and Attributes to a Career

FIRST!

What is meant by “college”?

What else is meant by “college”? 2-year Community & Technical Colleges

Specialty/Trade Colleges

How does the Military = “college”?  Military Academies  Incredibly selective, four-year institutions for students who want a CAREER as a military leader  Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC)  Students engage in military leadership training while earning their 4-year degree  Enlist  Students begin serving and can get on-the-job and/or college training while serving  Reserves  Students join the reserves and can get some assistance with education and/or training while participating in military training once-per-month

What else is meant by “college”? The Original 4-year Degree: $5 Million from Federal Govt. for new Apprenticeships!

Guiding ? ’s to Ask Oneself Who Am I? Skills, Interests, Values & Lifestyle Preference What, then, can I become? Careers that are a good fit for you based on “Who Am I?”…. How do I become that? Education/Training needed for your career(s) of interest.

What you “become” should be influenced by “who” you are…

33% or 1/3 29%

Apprenticeship or Technical School Employment or Gap Year Military How do I become “that” ? 2 or 4-year College Skill Gap = jobs!

Graduation Requirements (22 credits) The minimum course requirements for OHS graduation: 4 credits of English 3 credits of Math – Alg 1, Geometry, Alg 2** 2 credits of Science – incl. 1 lab science 3 credits of Social Studies (plus WA State History from middle school) 1 credit of Fine Art n (CTE)1 credit of Career Technical Education (CTE) 2 credits of Health & Wellness (.5 Health & 1.5 PE) 6 credits in Electives 1 semester =.5 credit; 1 year = 1.0 credit

Opening the Doors of Opportunity 4 years English 4 years Math 3 years Social Studies 3-4 years Science (usually includes Biology, Chemistry and/or Physics) 2 years Health & Fitness (.5 Health & 1.5 Fitness) 1 year Occupational Education 1 year of Art 2-4 years World Language Advanced levels of electives

Picking Classes Select courses that are best for YOU, not your best friend. Take the most rigorous classes that meet your needs and ability level. Look for classes that build new skills or help you master current ones. Make sure you’re keeping “doors” open and maximizing your choice of post-high school options come senior year….

Extracurricular Activities : Clubs, Music, Drama, Sports, Leadership, Youth Groups, Activism Community Service: Church affiliated, school clubs, tutoring, non-profits and other community organizations Getting involved is about more than building your resume or college app…. It’s about improving your skills & defining your interests too!

How do high school counselors help students find their “right” fit? Academic support, advisement and encouragement: Help students stay on track for graduation and reach their post-high school goals. Career and College advising: Help students identify their interests/strengths, explore career paths, and determine an educational plan (high school and beyond) that will prepare students for their future career. Personal/Social/Emotional issues: Help students manage friendships, family, stress, conflict mediation, grief/loss, life transitions, etc.

Choosing the right post-high school path IS a part-time job on it’s own!

My Parting Thought for the day….

Classes of …this will be your student(s) before you know it, so let’s help him/her/them make the most of their time here!
