Tutorials and Attendance  One-to-one tutorials: By appointment with your group tutor(s)  Group tutorial  All Core and tutorial sessions are facilitated with ICT facilities. You are expected to be on site to make use of these sessions to get ahead of or catch up with your assignments  Attendance benchmark: 95%  Promonitor, Markbook, and Student portal  Updating your contact details with Group tutors  Absence: the subject tutor and copy you group tutor(s) into the before or on the morning of your absence. Shengchi Eddie Hsu

Learning Resource Centres  Library Induction will take place during the first Core/ Tutorial sessions  Activate your account and change your default password on any college student computer  Harvard Referencing guide. (Available at the Woodbury LRC)  Woodbury and Millennium LRCs – useful resources  Printed materials (books and periodicals), E-books, electronic journals, LRC catalogues.  Computer facilities Shengchi Eddie Hsu

Canvas & Storing Your Assignments  Teaching and Learning resources are made available on respective module Moodle pages.  This is NOT a distance learning programme, you cannot always catch up with the materials on Moodle. Attending lessons will ensure that you have the most accurate input to assist you with your assignments.  Canvas and the materials there are used to stretch, expand and broaden your knowledge and learning experience.  You may be asked to contribute to online forum discussions where applicable.  We recommend you subscribe to free Cloud services such as Dropbox or Google Drive. Shengchi Eddie Hsu

Assessment of Coursework  Mainly assignment-based assessments  At least one test in each module  Your assignment must satisfy the assessment criteria before grades can be awarded (i.e. You must complete all the tasks satisfactorily)  Assignments are NOT necessarily given to you at the start of the unit. However, you will be informed of the unit contents and learning outcomes stipulated by Open Awards.  Mindset: Learning is the key; assignments and tests are to assess your learning. Shengchi Eddie Hsu

Submission and Resubmission  All assignments must be submitted before the deadline (Time: 5pm)  Late submission will result in the assignment grade being capped at Pass  Late submission will not be allowed for resubmission (i.e. if you fail to complete and achieve all tasks, you will have to go through the referral procedures).  In all cases, assignments to be signed in and submitted at the Woodbury Reception (unless otherwise stated).  Your assignments should be marked and returned no longer than 4 weeks from the submission date.  All resubmissions are to be completed and resubmitted within 7 calendar days from the date of return. Shengchi Eddie Hsu

Resubmissions  LATE resubmissions will be capped at PASS.  Use the feedback from tutors effectively to ensure that you meet the criterion (criteria) in your resubmission  No grade polishing: that is to say you can only “redo or add to” the section(s) which does/ do not satisfy the criterion (criteria); sections that have achieved cannot be changed, amended, or bettered in any way.  Resubmissions to be completed as a separate document and attached to the first submission.  Final Unit grade will be reached with the collective evidence of your first submission and the resubmitted section(s). Shengchi Eddie Hsu

What is “Referral”?  It means that you have failed your attempts of assignment submission either (A) Because your late submission does not satisfy all the assessment criteria Or (B) Because your resubmission does not satisfy all the assessment criteria In this case, your work will be “referred” to the Exam Board for consideration. This can be a very time-consuming process and can delay your progress on the programme. We highly recommend that you meet the deadline and effectively use the feedback. Shengchi Eddie Hsu

Assignment Presentation  Word-processed, font Arial, size 12 and double-spaced (unless otherwise stated).  Page number should be clearly marked with surname (e.g. Jackson 1) and aligned to the right in the Heading. Make sure all pages are submitted.  In the Assignment Brief (TA2), all boxes, including submission date, signatures etc, must be completed before submission.  Learner comment to be completed after assessment is complete.  Tutors may require you to present your assignments differently; please consult your module tutor or respective assignment brief for details. Shengchi Eddie Hsu

Extensions and Mitigating Circumstances EExtensions and Mitigating Circumstances Form available in your Access to HE Student handbook. (Editable version downloadable on Moodle) AA maximum of 5 working days can be granted AAll records of extension applications will be recorded on Pro-monitor and Mandatory documentations Shengchi Eddie Hsu

Extensions  For extension: (A) Apply for it from your module tutor at least 48 hours before the deadline. (B) Submit the completed application (paper or electronic copy) with your draft assignment to your module tutor. (C) Application will be considered based on all evidences submitted. You will be informed of the decision by your Module Tutor. Shengchi Eddie Hsu

Mitigating Circumstances  For Mitigating Circumstances: (A) If you need more than 5 working days, or if you can only apply for extensions within 48 hours from the deadline (B) Submit the completed application (paper or electronic copy) with your draft assignment to Curriculum Manager, Lisa Matthews. (C) Application will be considered based on all evidences submitted. You will be informed of the decision by the Curriculum Manager. Shengchi Eddie Hsu

Grading  There are 7 Grading Descriptors pre-determined by the QAA.  Open Awards stipulate select GDs against each unit, dependent on the nature of the unit and the assessment criteria.  Tutors select the grading components to best and most fairly grade each and every assignment.  To be eligible for grading, you must comply with the submission rules. Shengchi Eddie Hsu

An example of a GD Source: QAA Grading Handbook (2014) Shengchi Eddie Hsu

Working out your final unit grade Fi FIGURE 1 Shengchi Eddie Hsu

Referring to FIGURE 1  The assignment uses a total of 4 grading descriptors. Student A is awarded 3 passes + 1 Merit The final grade for the unit is PASS (majority) Student B is awarded 2 Distinctions + 2 Merits The final grade for the unit is MERIT (as GD 7 determines the grade) Shengchi Eddie Hsu

APPEALING YOUR GRADE  First approach the marking tutor to raise your query  You will be given feedback, justifications and ways to improve (in addition to what is already on your feedback sheet) No grades can be changed at this point.  If still dissatisfied, complete an Appeals Form (Avaialble on Canvas).  Deliver your assignment and the completed form to the Curriculum Manager, Lisa Matthews.  You will then be contacted for an interview Remarking can be assigned, but grades may move up or down. Shengchi Eddie Hsu

Internal and External Moderations  Internal Moderation will be completed before the assignments are returned to you.  External moderations take place a few times in a year, students (a) may be required to attend an interview with the external moderator; (b) are responsible to collating, keeping and presenting their marked assignments to the external moderator when required; (c) All grades awarded through marking and IV are not formalised until after the EV visits. Shengchi Eddie Hsu

Portfolio and Presentation You will need: (A) 1 large lever-arch file, with name and student number clearly labelled on the side of the file; (B) A cover page on top of all the assignments clearly stating your diploma title, name, student number, group tutor’s name(s) and a list of modules; (C) Unit Grade Log (downloadable from Canvas). Shengchi Eddie Hsu

Plagiarism and Referencing  What is plagiarism?  How much can you quote?  In-text Citation  Bibliography  Subject tutor to inform you of Harvard Referencing/ Group Tutors to support Read Ofqual Guides on Canvas Source: Glogster, Shengchi Eddie Hsu

Complaints  Raise your concerns through the following channels (1) Use student feedback sessions led by Student Reps (2) Shengchi Eddie Hsu directly (3) Or alternatively Curriculum Manager, Lisa Matthews Source: Shengchi Eddie Hsu
