Applying teaching techniques and strategies that incorporate respect for various cultures

Applying teaching techniques and strategies that incorporate respect for various cultures continued… “Always Keep in Mind the Learning Goal and Keep the Challenge Where It Belongs” (Ollie, 2013).

Applying teaching techniques and strategies that incorporate respect for various cultures continued…

The model for multicultural education in the 21st century focuses on the role of teachers in meeting the unique needs of diverse students and their families (Wardle, 2013). This model represents the information covered in the twelve chapters of the textbook by Wardle, 2013).

Illustrating socio-historical impacts on language and culture in education Mendez vs Westminster School District – 1947 A federal circuit court in California reached the decision in the case of Mendez v. Westminster in 1947 stating that segregation of Mexican American school children was unconstitutional. This happened seven years before Brown vs. Board of Education. "Mendez was critical to the strategic choices and legal analysis used in arguing Brown..."(Blanco,2010).

Illustrating socio-historical impacts on language and culture in education continued… Brown vs. Board of Education-1954 This historical event is considered "one of the greatest Supreme Court decisions of the 20th century" (McBride,2006).

Illustrating socio-historical impacts on language and culture in education continued… Ruby Bridges Attends All White School 1960 On November 14, 1960, Ruby Bridges attended her first day of first grade at William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans (Staser, 2008).

Illustrating socio-historical impacts on language and culture in education continued… The Bilingual Education Act, also known as Title VII of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, is a milestone in our history as it was the first federal legislation "to address the unique educational needs of students with limited English-speaking ability...(Oor, 2011). Bilingual Education Act-1968 The Bilingual Education Act, also known as Title VII of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, is a milestone in our history as it was the first federal legislation "to address the unique educational needs of students with limited English-speaking ability...(Oor, 2011).

Discriminating the contemporary contexts of prejudice

Discriminating the contemporary contexts of prejudice continued… Paulo Freire’s life is an example of “… great capacity to love by the coherence with which he lived his life and his unyielding commitment to social justice which gave and continues to give to all of us tremendous hope that a discriminatory world can be changed to become more just, less dehumanizing and more humane. Acknowledging always that change is difficult but it is possible” (FreireProject, 2012).

Examining educational practices of the school system as it relates to different groups. “Inclusion is part of a much larger picture than just placement in the regular class within school. It is being included in life and participating using one’s abilities in day to day activities as a member of the community. Inclusion is being a part of what everyone else is, being welcomed and embraced as a member who belongs It is being a part of what everyone else is, and being welcomed and embraced as a member who belongs. Inclusion can occur in schools, churches, playgrounds, work and in recreation” (Kids Together, Inc., 2006). (Shutterstock, 2014)

Justifying the importance of parent and community involvement in the school Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory. “The most direct influence on the child is the microsystem, which includes the child's family, school, neighborhood, and community agencies such as clinics, libraries, museums, and clubs” (Wardle, 2013).
