Pierced for Us John 19:31-42 The Witness Blood and Water “Secret Disciples”

The Witness  The writer, John, may be referring to himself.  John could also be distinguishing between himself as the writer and a second witness.  John could also be calling God to witness.  Most likely this witness is John because of the parallel found in John 21:24. Pierced for Us John 19:31-42

John 21:24 (ESV) 24 This is the disciple who is bearing witness about these things, and who has written these things, and we know that his testimony is true.

Blood and Water  What does this blood and water mean?  It could signify the two sacraments of blood (the Lord’s Table) and water (Baptism).  As Eve came from the side of Adam, so the Church comes from the side of Christ, the second Adam.  Some believe this to be medical evidence of a “broken” heart, the cause of Jesus’ death. Zechariah 12:10 (ESV) 10 “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.

Blood and Water  Why did John record this incident?  Jesus was really dead – 1 Corinthians 15:3-4!  The fulfillment of Scripture – Psalm 34:20; Zechariah 12:10.  Jesus’ bones not being broken point to Him as the Passover Lamb – Exodus 12:46; Numbers 9:12. Pierced for Us John 19:31-42

Numbers 9:12 (ESV) 12 They shall leave none of it until the morning, nor break any of its bones; according to all the statute for the Passover they shall keep it.

Leviticus 17:11 (ESV) 11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life.

Secret Disciples” “Secret Disciples”  The main cause of “Secret Disciples” is fear!  “Fear of the Jews” – John 19  “Love of the praise of men” – John 12  Fear of what others may think  Fear of what you might lose  Fear of what it might cost Pierced for Us John 19:31-42

“Secret Disciples”  The cost of being a “Secret Disciple” who really is a believer.  The loss of fellowship with Jesus  The loss of fellowship with other believers  Even these “Secret Disciples” were used by God to fulfill the prophecy of Isaiah 53:9. Pierced for Us John 19:31-42

Isaiah 53:9 (ESV) 9 And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth.
