Engineering Design 3-D Printing Curriculum

Overview The challenge The plan The engineering process Meet the requirements Design iteration Plan for next class

The Challenge Build and race a battery-powered car. Use a 3-D printer to make plastic parts. Think like an engineer to improve your car. Work in teams.

Competition Overview Each team’s car will compete in three events: – Design Review Presentation: graded – Drag Race: fastest time wins – Hill Climb: farthest distance up steepest ramp wins The highest overall score wins. Design Review50 ptsCalculated based on the team grade Drag Race100 pts 100 points to the top team, 20 points to the last-place team Hill Climb50 pts50 points to the top team, 10 points to the last-place team

Activity Overview Week 1 Learn the engineering process. Learn about prototyping. Begin concept design. Week 2 Build and test your car. 3-D print parts for your car. Week 3 Present your design to the class. Race against other teams.

Schedule WeekDayActivity 1 1 LECTURE – Learn about the engineering design process and the competition. 2 LECTURE – Learn about prototyping and split into teams. 3 TEAM TIME – Design Day 4 5 LECTURE – Learn how to plan and execute experiments.

What is Engineering Design? Engineering design is the process of devising a solution to meet a need. It is a decision-making process that: – Is logical. – Is iterative. – Applies science and mathematics for a purpose.

The Engineering Process Test & Evaluate Update Design Build Identify Problem Ideation Design Share Solution

The Engineering Process Test & Evaluate Update Design Build Identify Problem Ideation Design Share Solution

How Do You Identify the Problem? Engineers must define the criteria and constraints of the design problem with enough precision that everyone understands the challenge. How engineers determine constraints: – Talk to people. – Observe people. – Look at similar things. Luckily, we have a design challenge for you.

Competition Rules 1.Each vehicle shall use the mandatory competition components. 2.Each vehicle shall have a maximum width of less than 4.5 inches. 3.Each vehicle shall have a material cost of less than $ A printed copy of these rules will be given to each team.

Mandatory Components 1.Chassis 2.Bushings 3.Axles 4.Motor 5.AA battery 6.AA battery holder & 6

Maximum Width Maximum width measured as shown Outside of tire to outside of tire 4.5" or less

Maximum Vehicle Cost Each design decision you make will have a cost associated with it. The cost of your final car must be less than $33.

The Engineering Process Test & Evaluate Update Design Build Identify Problem Ideation Design Share Solution What is going on here?

Design Iteration The first thing you build is rarely the best solution, so often you must iterate. Engineers build prototypes and test them to learn! – Eventually, you will: – Get it perfect (not likely). – Have it working and run out of time (more likely).

Next Class Introduce prototyping. Assign teams. Hand out Engineering Notebooks. Assign Competition Catalogs to teams.
