1 Good Morning  Open BINDER to Unit 1 Air Hockey Disc Follow instructions for Date and Title Copy Language Objective Do This Every Day when you come in Read the daily lesson while you wait for instructions

2 Air Hockey Disc Day 1 Ramp Design

3 Engineering Objective:
Design a ramp that an air hockey disc will use to roll down the hallway. Materials: Paper Air Hockey Disc Meter stick

4 Prior Knowledge What is a ramp? Air Hockey Disc – edge
What do we want to know? How far can the disc travel using a ramp at different heights? Meter stick – how do we measure in meters?

5 Student Guide Question #1
Group of 4-5 students. Discuss the materials and objectives. In your notebook, draw the materials and create a basic design of the ramp. Label the page "Air Hockey Disc Ramp.”

6 Question #2 Start constructing the ramp. Write the discussion and modification notes below. (Cause and Effect) These are your ideas. Write down any changes you make and why. These ideas can be in the form of pictures. Details

7 Good Morning  Continue with Air Hockey Disc Project Need: Science Notebook Student Guide Regular assigned seats for attendance and dress code check

8 Air Hockey Disc Day 2 Ramp Design

9 Complete Questions #3-#7
Rules: Quiet in the hall use hand signals and no voices Record the distance each disc travels in meters. (m) Before the end of class, all members should have a completed student guide.

10 Homework 1. Complete student guide if not completed in class. 2. Write an explanation of the activity in your notebook. Start with the design and end with reasoning of the results. Student Guide is a Project Grade

11 Good Morning  Continue with Air Hockey Disc Project Need:
Science Notebook Student Guide Regular assigned seats for attendance and dress code check

12 Day 3 Discussion of Results
Air Hockey Disc Day 3 Discussion of Results

13 Engineering Review and questions to guide future projects.

14 How do engineers use science and technology to identify and solve problems?
What do we start with? Is it a question to be answered? A problem that needs a solution? How do criteria and constraints guide and limit design solutions? What criteria and constraints were used in this activity?

15 How are competing design solutions evaluated?
What were the differences between the designs and the distance the discs traveled? Were there any correlations between the groups?

16 How can various proposed design solutions be compared and improved?
Were any changes made to the design that created improvements? After all the results, conclusions for solutions, how can an optimal solution be achieved? What would have been an optimal solution in this activity?

17 Turn in student guide Make sure your full name, period and date is on your student guide.

18 Future engineering projects
Balloon racers – some criteria and constraints Roller coaster loop – some constraints Egg drop – many criteria and constraints
