Main goals of SYMBIOPTIMA The aim of the project is to develop software and hardware tools that could help improve the overall performance from process plant till industrial cluster levels, by optimizing the consumption (and, if possible, re-use) of its main resources: water, thermal energy, electricity, raw materials, waste, etc. Mutual interaction of diverse industries, also among different sectors, for beneficial reuse of flows resulting in a more resource-efficient production at network level, and in fewer adverse environmental impacts.

Scientific/Technical goals GOAL 1 – To develop an holistic energy and resource management systems should facilitate significant gains in sustainable processing with regard to resource efficiency, energy efficiency and the emission performance HOW - SYMBIOPTIMA technological advancements are built around its ERMS, i.e. cross-company and interoperable management platform, for the integrated optimization of energy and resources of the symbiotic industrial cluster as a whole.

Scientific/Technical goals GOAL 2 – Optimisation of energy and resources supply and demand in selected areas should to reduce the overall costs in energy intensive industries by taking into consideration both economic and sustainability factors HOW – The platform multilayer architecture integrates tools for: process optimization, based on energy aware planning and scheduling and demand response strategies SCM for the synergetic optimization of energy and resources both acting intra and inter companies and within industrial clusters

Scientific/Technical goals GOAL 3 – To achieve optimisation of interdependencies and the identification of technology components allowing for a cost effective reduction in the use of resources, which overcomes the difficult cross-company collaboration HOW – Synergic combined action of: Extensive monitoring of heterogeneous streams between different companies through interoperable framework for smart monitoring Smart Thermal Energy Grid optimized management of thermal energy across multiple companies, Development of a novel technology for chemical recycling of PET

Technical cross-cutting issues What SPIRE-relevant technical cross-cutting issues are addressed in your project that would increase the overall impact? Shared concept of energy use, consumption and aggregation across the cluster, from equipment, to production unit, to plant, till industrial park Multi level energy aware scheduling and optimization, based on dynamic models Interoperable framework for smart monitoring, integrating data gathering and processing across existing distributed systems

Non-technical cross-cutting issues What SPIRE-relevant non-technical cross-cutting issues are addressed in your project that would increase the overall impact? Development of an integrated LCSA (Life-cycle sustainability assessment) framework and tool, as well as Business models fostering industrial symbiosis, specifically targeting: Profitable business models to support secondary stream re-use Methodologies for cross-sectorial identification of sustainability impact for the secondary streams; Framework to promote new Standardization process to foster circular economy, addressing complementarities for existing standards which are linked to the process industry and sustainability, key aspects to be standardized in order to enforce secondary streams market, measurement methods to enable the framework.

Synergies and benefits of clustering What cluster activities have you undertaken in the last year / are you planning to undertake? SYMBIOPTIMA is planning to contact and network neighbouring projects, as well as to set up external industrial interest groups How have cluster activities added / would add value to your projects? By extending and completing the perspective on « energy-related » management aspects at production and industrial park levels How can cluster activities help exploitation of results after the projects end? By creating a matchmaking platform to support the contact among interested subjects and result developers/owners
