Reading Information for Parents

How many sounds are in Manchester? How many syllables are in supercalifragilisticexpialido cious?

The ‘simple view’ of reading Good Poor Language Comprehension processes Word Recognition processes Language Comprehension processes Word Recognition processes

Visual Phonic decoding Does the word look right? Good word recognition and phonic skills Meaning Does it make sense? Language comprehension and context. Knowledge of the world Structure Does it follow English sentence structure? Grammatical structures Knowledge of a sentence

Phonics - the segmenting and blending of sounds Phonemes – the smallest unit of sound in a word. Generally accepted there are 44 phonemes in spoken English. cat hat

Grapheme – a letter or letters that spell a phoneme(sound) in a word. In order to read an unfamiliar word, you must ‘sound out’ each grapheme, not each letter and then merge (blend) the sounds together. Sh i p

Guided Reading Working with small group of children of similar ability. The reader is operating at the instructional level ( 90 – 94 % accuracy). The child reads well enough to do some problem solving and there will be teaching opportunities.

Individual Reading Word recognition (decoding) and language comprehension are both necessary to be a good reader but the balance between the two changes as children acquire skills. Progress from learning to read to reading to learn for information and pleasure.

Reading at Home Be a good role model- let them see you read and the purpose of it. Read a bedtime story – this is so enjoyable and allows them to learn about the structure of stories and language. ( in any language) Read signs when you are out and about No litter Car park Bus stop Visit the library – you can borrow 12 books free

Read for 10 – 15 minutes together each day. Don’t make it appear a chore. Talk about the pictures first. Children will be coming home with books that they can experience a high degree of success working towards 95% accuracy. Talk about the book you have shared together. Practice the skills taught in reading sessions in school – phonic and high frequency words in your reading record. Record if you have heard them read-this really helps the teacher to know who is practicing at home. The teacher will record in here too. Children Reading at Home
