Nutrition (Day 4)

Bell Ringer (Day 4) Read pages in your health book. List the five reasons why some teens are at risk for developing eating disorders.

Diets and Cancer Good dietary habits can promote health and reduce risk of developing cancer. To reduce the risk of developing cancer, follow these 7 dietary guidelines:

1-Avoid Obesity Choose a lifestyle that combines healthy eating with regular physical activity. Being overweight or obese increases your risk for: –high blood pressure –high blood cholesterol –heart disease –stroke –diabetes A healthy weight is key to a long, healthy life.

2-Eat A Variety of Foods Gives your body a combination of nutrients. A variety of foods will give your body antioxidants. An antioxidant is a substance that protects cells from being damaged by oxidation.

3- Eat several Servings of Fruits and Vegetables Fruits and vegetables reduce the risk of developing cancers of the colon, rectum, prostate and stomach.

4- Eat Several Servings of Fiber Fiber: the part of grains and plant foods that cannot be digested. Eating fiber-rich foods helps you have a daily bowel movement reducing the risk of developing cancer of the colon.

5- Limit Fat Intake Especially saturated fats. Diets high in fats will cause you to gain weight.

6-Limit Foods that are Smoked, or Salted Increases healthy cells to become abnormal. Limiting these foods will reduce the risks of developing cancers of the esophagus and stomach.

7- DO NOT Drink Alcohol Changes or kills body cells. Robs the body of vitamins needed for optimal health. Avoiding drinking will reduce cancers of the mouth, liver, throat, and stomach.

Diet & Cardiovascular Diseases A Cardiovascular disease is a disease of the heart and blood vessels. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of premature death and disability. You can reduce the risk of developing premature cardiovascular diseases by practicing the following dietary guidelines.

1- Limit Fat Intake Especially saturated fats and foods high in cholesterol. Cholesterol is a fat-like substance made by the body and found in certain foods. This cholesterol can cause plaque(hardened deposits) to form on artery walls.

2- Increase Antioxidants Antioxidants help prevent wear and tear in blood vessels. Foods that contain the vitamins A, C, & E. Ex: (A)carrots, squash, sweet potatoes Ex: (C) oranges, pineapple Ex: (E) nuts, green vegetables, whole grains, and breads

3-Limit Your Sodium You only need this in small amount. Recommended daily allowance is 3 Grams Ex: Eat fresh foods, not packaged, taste food before adding salt, season with other spices. **A level teaspoonful is just under 2.4 grams of sodium

Eating Disorders An eating disorder is a mental disorder in which a person has a compelling need to starve, binge, and purge. Binge is to eat large amounts of food over a short period of time. Purge is to rid the body of food by vomiting or by using laxatives.

Addiction An addiction is a compelling need to take a drug or engage in a specific behavior. Eating disorders are addictions. There are 5 reasons why some teens are at risk for developing eating disorders:

5 Reasons 1.Some teens place too much emphasis on their appearance. 2.Some teens are uncomfortable with their body. 3.Some teens are perfectionists. 4.Some teens feel their lives are out of control. 5.Some teens can’t express their emotions.

Obesity A Binge eating disorder is an eating disorder in which a person cannot control eating and eats in excessive amounts.
