Students will be able to differentiate between: macro and trace minerals. Students will be able to read and describe the meaning of nutrition labels on food products. Students will be able to differentiate and describe three types of heat disorders. Students will be able to describe types of eating disorders. Students will be able to define binge and purge. Students will be able to define addiction.

6 Two Types of Minerals Macro Minerals –These are required in amounts greater than 100 milligrams. –Ex: Calcium and sodium Trace Minerals –These are needed in very small amounts. –Ex: Iron and Zinc Trace minerals are as important to the body as macro minerals

7 Examples of Minerals Iron helps in the formation of hemoglobin, which is the part of your red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body Potassium keeps your muscles and nervous system working properly. Zinc helps your immune system, which is your body's system for fighting off illnesses, also helps with cell growth and helps heal wounds Calcium helps build strong bones Sodium helps to regulate the amount of water in and around your body's cells

8 Limit Your Sodium You only need this in small amount. Recommended daily allowance is 3 Grams Ex: Eat fresh foods, not packaged, taste food before adding salt, season with other spices. **A level teaspoonful is just under 2.4 grams of sodium

10 Nutrition Facts Serving Size: The amount of food that is considered a serving.

11 Nutrition Facts Servings Per Container: Number of servings in the container.

12 Nutrition Facts Calories Listing: Number of calories in 1 serving.

13 Nutrition Facts Calories from Fat: Number of calories from fat in 1 serving.

14 Nutrition Facts Percent Daily Value: Portion of daily amount of a nutrient in 1 serving.

15 Ingredients The ingredients are listed in order of decreasing weight in the product. The weight of the wheat flour is more than the weight of anything else

16 Eating Disorders A mental disorder in which a person has a compelling need to starve, binge, and purge.

17 Eating Disorders Binge is to eat large amounts of food over a short period of time.

18 Eating Disorders Purge is to rid the body of food by vomiting or by using laxatives.

19 Addiction A compelling need to take a drug or engage in a specific behavior. Eating disorders are addictions.

20 There are 5 reasons why some teens are at risk for developing eating disorders: 1.Some teens place too much emphasis on their appearance. 2.Some teens are uncomfortable with their body. 3.Some teens are perfectionists. 4.Some teens feel their lives are out of control. 5.Some teens can’t express their emotions.
