+ VMHS AVID Expectations “Advancement Via Individual Determination” - AVID is a choice, NOT a right! Adopt the AVID methodologies - must be willing to change some personal habits. Maintain a competitive grade point average – must commit to academic efforts to improve grades. Complete a rigorous course of study – advanced courses throughout high school career (Advanced/AP/Dual Enrollment). Actively participate on campus (sports, clubs, leadership, etc.)

+ AVID Protocol All schedule changes MUST be done via the AVID teacher, AVID coordinator, and the AVID counselor. Priority of schedule changes is based on “AVID cluster teachers” who support the needs of AVID students. Student/teacher communication VERY important. Student schedules are determined by the AVID program. Students are accountable to their own success. Entering/exiting the AVID program is a family choice and requires parental/guardian consent.

+ AVID Methodologies AVID Methodologies AVID binder – encourages organization skills. Cornell notes - Stimulate critical thinking skills and foster test preparation. Daily note check - First 30 minutes of class for those not maintaining B’s or higher in core academic classes Binder checks - Every 3 weeks; monitor note taking and organization. Grade checks - Every 2 weeks; monitor progress in classes (students are required to submit a grade printout from Aeries). Senior Study Groups (tutorials ) – once a week; foster critical thinking skills and analysis. Tutoring - Available on a need and/or mandatory basis.

+ Expectations of AVID 12 Complete monthly checklists on time (all tasks are directly related to the college application/readiness process Apply to at least one 4-year university of choice (recommendation is to apply to 5) Research and apply to 2 scholarships per month Complete and file a FAFSA application Complete and present the Senior AVID Project Complete all classes with a C or better Participate in end-of-year senior AVID activities

+ Tutoring Program Students are required to turn in Aeries grade printouts every 2 weeks Mandatory tutoring will be assigned for a 2 week period as follows: C’s = 30 minutes D’s = 1 hour F’s = 2 hours Tutoring hours: 1 st Lunch – Mon. (EE12), Tues.-Wed. (W241), Thurs. (S113), Fri. (EE21) 2 nd Lunch – Mon. – Fri. (EE28) Late Start Mondays - 7:00 – 8:30 (EE28) Mornings – 7:00 – 7:30 (EE28)

+ Required Classes for College A-G Requirements: A: History/Social Science-2 years required B: English-4 years required C: Mathematics-3 years required, 4 recommended D: Lab Science-2 years required, 3 recommended E: Foreign Language-2 years required, 3 recommended F: Visual and Performing Arts-1 year required G: College Prep Elective-1 year required

+ Scholarships Students are required to research and apply to 2 scholarships per month. Scholarships MUST meet the following criteria: 500+ word requirement Show evidence of having submitted the scholarship Complete scholarship label with name and amount Average student spends 80 hours trying to obtain $5000 in scholarship money.” Is it worth your time? Payout = $62.50 per hour All AVID 12 students will apply to the RIMS AVID scholarship in January.

+ SAT/ACT Students needing to retake the SAT/ACT should commit 2 hours per week to study. Balancing formula = lower GPA requires higher SAT/ACT CSU’s will superscore = best score by section UC’s will NOT superscore SAT Dates: Oct. 3 rd, Nov. 7 th, *Dec. 5 th ACT Dates: Oct. 24 th, *Dec. 12 th *Tests taken in December will be accepted from colleges, however scores will not be available in time for applications.

+ 4-Year University vs. Community College Bachelor’s Degree Completion Rates: Private University = 84% Public University = 83% Community College = 55% Transfer Rates from Community College: Students having no intent to transfer = 33% Students having plans to transfer to a 4-year university = 67% Of this number, students that end up transferring = 61% Students starting at a community college that never end up transferring = 39% Only 16% of community college students successfully complete coursework and transfer to a 4-year college within 2.5 years. 44% of community college students are no longer enrolled in any college after 2.5 years. Only 34% of all community college students obtain a Bachelor’s degree within 6 years.

+ AVID Donation/Fundraising $50 per student per school year ($5 per month average) $50 X 425 students = $21,250 Donation (tax write off) - pay cash to bookkeeper (Mrs. Biagioni) or online with credit card at the Trading Post by October 15 th Fundraise - sell the equivalent of $50 profit (average profit return is about 25%, which amounts to selling about $200 worth of product) (*ALL AVID students will participate in the 1 st annual AVID Study-a-Thon in December!)
