The Value of a Veteran Paul Huszar, P.E. President and CEO LTC, U.S. Army (retired) (813) Sustaining a Legacy of Service!

Agenda Understanding the Gap Defining the Barriers The Values That Lead to Value Ideas for Developing a Hiring Program

Sustaining a Legacy of Service! U.S. Population - increasing

Sustaining a Legacy of Service! Percentage of the Population in the Armed Forces

Sustaining a Legacy of Service! A Declining veteran population

Sustaining a Legacy of Service! Percentage of Veterans by Age in the U.S. In U.S., 24% of Men, 2% of Women Are Veterans

Sustaining a Legacy of Service! Defining the Barriers and Dispelling the Rumors They all have PTSD – not!!! All they do is “shoot, move and communicate”- vs. actual tooth to tail (25-33%) Translation and the real challenge with credentials So what’s a resume? (and an interview?) It takes a network… Today’s job market

Sustaining a Legacy of Service!

Veterans Values Integrity Reliability Leadership Trustworthy Agile and adaptive Intense sense of duty Dedicated team player High standards and self disciplined Technically proficient and quick learner Strong work ethic and not afraid to get dirty Always completes the mission, never accepts defeat

Sustaining a Legacy of Service! So Why Hire a Vet? Culture, norms and values Lifelong learners – used to changing jobs and locations, but rapidly adapting and learning They have recipes for success Everything is worthy of an AAR Real value, and incentives to at least try them – Health care – Incentive programs (SEI, fellowships, GI Bill) – Tremendous value in “retirees” with a pension and/or disability compensation

Sustaining a Legacy of Service! “I’m Convinced! Now, how do we do it?” Use the VA – yeah right?! If you can afford it, hire a vet to manage your program Build a network: – Career Source – Chambers of Commerce, Military Affairs Councils – LinkedIn Groups – ESGR – State Organizations and County Veteran Councils – Local colleges and universities (USF #5 nationally for vets) – Non-profits and for profits organizations (VFW, American Legion, Team RWB, etc.) – Recruiters (Recruit Military, We Hire Heroes, V2C)
