The Aswan High Dam in Egypt is one of the biggest man-made projects in the world. The dam was completed in It was built for several reasons. First, the Nile River used to cause floods on much of the land near it every year. Listening Text

The dam has stopped the floods. Second, electricity can now be made from the water that rushes through the lower part of the dam. Now nearly half of Egypt’s electricity is produced from this dam. But the dam, which is one of the world’s largest, also caused several problems. The water in the lake behind

the dam rose by 63 metres. It became necessary to move 53,000 people from their villages. Also, near the Aswan Dam there were a lot of temples, some more than three thousand years old. These temples were in danger: when the dam was finished, many of them would be covered by water.

One of the most important temples was at Abu Simbel. It was made from rock and had on the outside four large stone persons, each twenty metres high. Engineers studied the problem and suggested different plans to rescue the temple. At last, they decided to

move the whole temple stone by stone and build it again above the water of the new lake. The temple took four years to build and cost one billion US dollars. In all, 1900 workers were needed to complete the project. Each stone was marked with a number.

The pieces of stone were then carried to the new place for the temple, 60 metres up a hill. In 1966, the dam was finished. Today Abu Simbel is still a quiet and beautiful place which visitors are glad to see.

Few architects in modern history have equaled the work of Ieoh Ming Pei. Born in China in 1917, Ieoh Ming Pei arrived in the US as a lively 17 year-old. He studied at Harvard, where he soon became a professor. In 1951, he travelled to Europe to see its great buildings for himself. Listening Text

For the nest forty years he designed some of the world’s Finest buildings. In 1964, he designed a library for President John F Kennedy. He also designed new parts of Famous art museums in the capital cities of the US and France. One of the projects he most enjoyed doing was a museum for rock’ n’ roll music.

Many architects design buildings more for artistes than common people. Pei believes that buildings must be useful too. Pei also believes that modern buildings can have a traditional look too. In 1982, he designed a hotel in a famous park in western Beijing. It was designed to look like both a traditional

Chinese and modern Western hotel. However, not all of Pei’s buildings are famous. Many are schools, hospitals, libraries, music halls and churches. Over the years, sixteen famous universities have honored I M Pei, including two in China. The governments of China, France,

Britain and the US have also honored his hard work. Perhaps most important, he has given much of his money and time to Chinese students who have a strong interest in architecture.
