Chapter 29 Light Cured Gels By: Brooke, Erica, and Des

Chemistry Monomer liquid and polymer powder are from the same family for light cured nail enhancements. Oligomer: a short chain of monomer liquids that is often thick, sticky, and gel-like that is not long enough to be considered a polymer. Mono - one (liquid) Poly - many (powder) Oligo - few (both)

Chemistry Urethane acrylate and urethane methacrylates are the main ingredients used in light cured nail enhancements. Photoinitiators: a chemical that initiates the polymerization reaction When the nails are exposed to the UV light, the photoinitiator in the gel reacts to the UV light and hardens it.

Description Viscosity: the measurement of the thickness of thinness of a liquid Gels can be thin, medium, or thick, and building or sculpting One-color method: one color of UV or LED gel is applied over the entire surface of the nail. Two-color method: two colors are used, gel nail, and then a color gel is applied over the entire surface of the nail.

Types of light cured gels Bonding gels: used the increase adhesion to natural nail plate similar to monomer liquid and polymer powder; varies in consistently and chemical components Building gels: thick-viscosity to help build an arch and curve Self leveling: thinner consistency → self settles Pigmented: can be building gels or self-leveling gels that have a color pigment

Types of light cured gels Gel polish: very thin-viscosity, pigmented Glossing gel (aka finishing gel): like a top coat, adds shine Inhibition layer: a tacky surface on the nail right after the nail has been cured. Opacity: the amount of color pigment, making it more or less difficult to see throughout

Supplies for light cured gels Light curing gel lamp Application brush (flat bristles) Gel primer Light cured gel Nail forms/tips Nail adhesive Nail dehydrator Files/buffers Medium/fine for nail prep and smoothing the surface Cleansing solution/wipes

When to use Light Cured Nails WHENEVER! Recommend to clients Combination of the two

What Type of Product That Should be Used! Flat Nails - create arch/curve: use a thicker UV or LED building gel Fingers with the arch/curve- self leveling gel (medium or thick-viscosity gel) Broken Enhancements- fiberglass gel Lasting Manicure- Soak off Gel Polish

Different Light Cured Bulbs & Lamps UV Bulb: UV light bulb that emits uv radiation to cure UV gel enhancements. (Bulbs used: 4-, 6-, 7-, 8-, 9-watt) UV Lamp: specialized electronic device that powers and controls UV bulbs to cure gel nails. LED: Light Emitting Diode LED Lamp: Electronic device that houses the LED bulbs. Lamp Wattage: Measurement of the amount of electricity the bulb consumes.

Advantages they cure instead of dry so they do not smudge polish does not thicken over time

nail art and light cured gels used to create nail art/enhancements lucrative nail art medium

Maintenance and removal use medium-grit abrasive file (180-grit) used to thin and shape cleanse nail with isopropanol hard uv/led gels: soak nails in acetone then file off soft uv/led gels: soak in acetone or product remover then use wooden stick to scrape off
