How do you think advertising affects how you live your everyday life?

What is your favorite commercial? Why is it your favorite commercial?

What is Advertising? A way in which companies sell goods and services to the public

Who Creates Advertising? Copywriter: Person who writes advertisements. Designer: Person who plans the layout of an ad and the components that will be used. Manager: Person who supervises the selling and writing of advertisements for a publication.

Why is Advertising Important? It’s how newspapers make most of their money. An ad sales representative contacts merchants or other business people and sells advertising space.

Where do we see advertising? Print TV Radio

Advertising and Marketing Terms Next Big Thing: This is what everyone is trying to find because finding the next big thing will get you a lot of money. Demographic or Target Market: Who and where you are marketing to. Can be an age group, gender, or socio-economic group.

Advertising and Marketing Terms Commercial: An advertisement on radio or television. Mindshare: Your remembering a product’s name, slogan, etc. It’s what advertisers are after.

Types of Advertisements Testimonial: People tell you about how they love a certain product. Often used in drug commercials.

Types of Advertisements Repetition: Saying the same thing over and over in order to get you to remember it.

Types of Advertisements Bandwagon: “Everyone else is doing it, so why can’t we?” Association: A certain person, song, or image makes you think of the product.

Types of Advertisements Pressure: The urgency of buying this product is stressed.

Types of Advertisements Emotional appeal: Using happy, sad, or other emotions

Tools in Advertising Advertisers use many things to appeal to our emotions, as well as our senses. –Familiar People, places, or things Celebrities as spokespeople Famous settings Popular songs –Humor –Sex

Types of Advertisements Slogans: A few words, usually a sentence, that serve as the “message” of the product Subliminal Advertising: A message that can’t be consciously seen or heard, but is picked up subconsciously.
