China has been ruled by dynasties. The first Chinese dynasty was the Shang. Shang was overthrown by the Zhou Dynasty. Later the Han Dynasty ruled the land.

Chinese militants attacked and murdered Europeans in China (1900). This was called the Boxer Rebellion. After the Boxer rebellion Sun Yat- sen founded the Kuomintang or Nationalist Party. During the 1920’s the Communist Party became very powerful.

When the communist party came into power it tried to do all China’s economic planning. This approach failed. In the 1980’s China has allowed the marketplace and consumers play a role in the economy. 60% of China’s workers work on farms.

China has the biggest population in the world. In 2000 the population was estimated at 1.3 billion. One of Chinas accomplishments is that they provide health care for its people. The health care mixes old world and new. Traditional herbs and acupuncture are used as well as modern drugs and surgery.

Mongolia & Taiwan

For many centuries many groups from China came to the island of Taiwan. Because of this there were large Chinese settlements on the island. Japanese seized Taiwan after winning a war with China in 1895.

China had a Mongol emperor. In the 1300 ’ s the Chinese drove the Mongols out. In 1600 the Chinese conquered Mongolia. China ruled Mongolia for hundreds of years. The Mongols adopted many ways of the Chinese culture.

Mongolia's economy was based on nomadic herding. When the Soviet Union fell apart, Mongolia was one of the first to shift to a market economy. Mongolia has large deposits of coal and petroleum. These resources are used for manufacturing and construction industries.

Many people still raise sheep, cattle, and goats. Those who remain nomadic guide their animals from grassland to grassland. The nomads live in tents called yurts.

Section 3 The Koreas: North and South

After WWII Northern Korea came under the influence of the Soviet Union. Southern Korea came under the influence of the United States. In 1950, North Korean troops invaded South Korea. This event started the Korean Conflict (War). In 2000 the two nations began talk of reuniting.

In North Korea, the government only allows art that glorifies communism or the folk tradition. Southern Korea has more freedom of expression due to the influence of western culture.

In June 2000, the leaders of North and South Korea decided they would like to reunite the two countries. The two Koreas agreed to reduce tension at the borders. The most important development is that families in North and South Korea are allowed to visit each other.

North and South Korea’s economies were based on agriculture before the Korean War. Now South Korea has one of the largest shipbuilding industries. It also has large steel, automobile and chemical industries. North Korea has many natural resources and raw materials. If North and South Korea reunite, the will be an economic powerhouse.

Japan was an ancient nation of many rulers who were protected by Samurai. In 1192 the Shoguns controlled Japan and it wasn’t until after WWII that Japan became a democracy.

127 million people live in Japan and over 75 % live in cities. Most cities are on the East side and they produce products from imported materials.

Japan adapted the Japanese language, religion, art, music and government from the Chinese.

Japan’s students go to school 6 days a week. They have shorter summer vacations than Americans. Japanese are making some changes in their society. People are increasing the demand to end pollution and overcrowding.
