2 Early Dynasties 2100 B.C. early farming societies developed in China Around 1766 B.C. dynasties formed (notable dynasties include the Shang, Zhou, Qin and Han) The Qin Dynasty gained control of China around 220 B.C. under the leadership of Shi Huangdi. He unified various border walls along the frontier to form the Great Wall of China ©2012, TESCCC

3 The Great Wall of China Built to protect China from invasions in the north Most famous portion began construction between 220 B.C. and 200 B.C. Built and rebuilt between 5 th century B.C. and 16 th century A.D. 5 Confucianism The teachings of Confucius influenced Chinese society for more than 2,000 years. Ethical system that teaches morality (right and wrong behaviors) “Don’t worry if people don’t recognize your merits; worry that you may not recognize theirs.” (Analects 1.16) Influenced Chinese society until the Communist Party took over in 1949 banning the practice. ©2012, TESCCC

9 Communist Revolution in China A series of political upheavals between 1911 and 1949. Brought about the end of dynasty rule Nationalist vs. Communists Mao Zedong led communist across the country (Long March) Mao’s forces won and the People’s Republic of China was established on the mainland Mao set up collective farms and ruled as a totalitarian dictator Great Leap Forward – a plan to increase the economy (20 million people died), unsuccessful plan ended in 1961 Today, China remains a communist nation ©2012, TESCCC
