Green World Green Parson Street

We have invited some visitors that have come to our school and have talked to us. Heather from Severnside Community Rail came after we wrote to her because we wanted to improve the way the local station looks. Now, we are growing seedlings to plant there! We were in the newspaper because of this! Martin Kizko,a famous green poet also came to our school and read some poems out to us!!

Bird Houses: We asked the DT club to make bird houses, that are now placed around the nature garden! Look out for them!

Green stuff around our school: This is the pond area and we planted some plants round there, especially ones insects and butterflies like! These are tins with poems on about having a greener school and helping the wildlife, also the enviroment! They were inspired by a green poet who came to share his book with us! We got the whole school to do some green creative writing!

Green pebbles: This encourages us to walk or scoot to school instead of driving! Now we work with Sustrans too so that we can have increased awareness of cycling to school! We even have Bike – It breakfasts!

Green Fingers: Green Fingers are energy saving cartoons! The green fingers say “over heating buildings wastes energy and money!” So in our green committee meeting we made some green fingers for us to take home and use. In school we turn off lights and monitors whenever we can! Even better, we have just had lots of solar panels installed to make us even more energy efficient!

Recycling paper: At Parson Street Primary School we recycle paper. Every classroom has their own bin to put recycling paper in. On Tuesday some children go round the school and collect the paper using green bins and green bags. We also recycle card, tins and food waste. We even collect our fruit skins and use them in our own compost bin! At the moment, we are setting paper reduction targets for each class so we can be even better!

Our Eco-school award: At Parson Street Primary School we have an echo school award – the Green Flag Award. We got it for being a very green eco school.

Our most recent projects: Music Magpie raising money by recycling CD’s. Recycling old mobile phones and printer cartridges to raise money for the PTA.

Zero Waste Olympics We competed against lots of other Bristol Schools to reduce, reuse and recycle. It took a lot of time and effort but eventually we were really pleased to be able to say we recycle over 88% of all our waste! This beat ALL the other competing schools and we got to have lunch with the mayor and be in the papers! Even better, we won £1000 to invest in our next green projects!

THANK YOU – We made this Power Point to present to our school governors and for our website – lots more news to follow soon! By Lucy and Rebecca
