2. Meet the Eco-Committee

3. First Task
Our first task was to ask the children in our classes some questions. This was done to find out how eco-friendly Whitehouse Primary really is.

4. Litter/Rubbish
Children agreed that there is too much litter in our school grounds.
The eco-committee agreed that…..
- everyone should make use of the bins in school grounds
- plan regular litter picking sessions

5. Energy
Y7 energy monitors do a great job of checking lights at break time
All children said that computers are left on in the ICT room
All felt that the classrooms get too hot

6. Waste
The children all agreed that our school is doing a good job recycling paper
Everyone agreed that we need to look into
other forms of recycling, especially
food

7. Water
Our toilets are fitted with water saving taps

8. School Grounds
Children felt we definitely need an area in our school grounds for growing plants
The committee will plan to include this in an outdoor learning area

9. Biodiversity
Most children felt that we need to encourage more wildlife by-
Adding more bird feeders in school grounds
Creating a bug hotel area

10. Transport
All agreed that our school has a lot of cars entering school grounds
All agreed that if possible we should try to walk or cycle to school
The committee would like to add a cycle or walk to school week in our New year new You week next year

11. Healthy Living
While we encourage healthy breaks, we do not have a healthy tuck shop at break time.
All agreed there were healthy choices available for school dinners
All agree that drinking water is available in class

12. Global Perspective
Some children agreed that pupils consider how our actions in school affect people in the environment locally and globally
The eco-committee felt this
was an area which could be
covered in the World Around Us
area of the curriculum

13. Climate Change
All children stated they used aerosol sprays after P.E. instead of roll on
The committee would like to encourage children to bring a roll on deodorant for after P.E.
We would also like to plant more plants and trees in our outdoor learning area

14. What next?
The eco-committee will organise a ‘waste campaign’ week in which new recycling bins will be used, including food waste.
Take part in ‘What’s under your feet’. This will require an investigation of the soil in our school grounds to look at the insects living there.
Create areas to encourage wildlife within school grounds and use recyclable material to plant shrubs and flowers.
