Biomedical Sciences At Palmetto High School

What Is Biomedical Science? Biomedical Science is defined as: ◦ The application of the principles of the natural sciences, especially biology and physiology, to clinical medicine.  Vocab Word

What is Principles of Biomedical Science? PBS is the first course in a sequence of four courses, that provides a rigorous and relevant curriculum that is project and problem-based in order to engage and prepare high school students for the post-secondary education and training necessary for success in the wide variety of health care careers.

Biomedical Science Courses Year 1- Principles of Biomedical Science (PBS) Year 2- Human Body Systems (HBS) Year 3- Medical Interventions (MI) Year 4- Biomedical Innovations (BI)

Principles of Biomedical Sciences Course Outline Student work involves the study of human medicine, research processes and an introduction to bioinformatics. Students investigate the human body systems and various health conditions including heart disease, diabetes, sickle- cell disease, hypercholesterolemia, and infectious diseases.

Key biological concepts including: homeostasis, metabolism, inheritance of traits, feedback systems, the relationship of structure to function, and defense against disease are embedded in the curriculum. The course is designed to provide an overview of all the courses in the Biomedical Sciences™ program and to lay the scientific foundation necessary for student success in the subsequent courses

Course Theme: A theme through the course is to determine the factors that led to the death of a fictional person. After determining the factors responsible for the death, the students investigate lifestyle choices and medical treatments that might have prolonged the person’s life.

Unit 1 – Human Body Systems The Mystery – Was It a Crime?

Unit 2 – Heart Attack

Unit 3 - Diabetes

Unit 4 – Sickle Cell Anemia

Unit 5 - Hypercholesterolemia

Unit 6 – Infectious Diseases

Unit 7 – Medical Interventions

Unit 8 – Grant Proposal
