Project Lead The Way At Paul Laurence Dunbar High School

Is Biomed for You?  Are you looking for increased rigor in your academic experience?  Are you interested in the medical field?  Do you like hands on classes?  Do you want to be challenged on a daily basis in Science?  Do you want the opportunity to earn College Science credit?  If you said yes, then Biomed is for you!

What makes biomed different?  Student-centered and Student-led  No lectures! Lots of Activities!  Hands-on and real world applications of information

What is the course sequence?  Freshmen Year –Principles of Biomedical Sciences Sciences  Sophomore Year –Human Body Systems  Junior Year –Medical Interventions  Senior Year –Biomedical Innovations

Principals of Biomedical Sciences course  Students investigate  human body systems  various health conditions including heart disease, diabetes, sickle-cell disease, hypercholesterolemia, and infectious diseases.  Activities and projects introduce students to  human physiology,  Medicine  research processes  bioinformatics

Freshman Year Activities  Heart dissection  Gram Staining/ Bacterial Identification  Take your own Heart Rate, Blood Pressure, EKGs  DNA Extraction  Microscope work  Gel Electrophoresis / DNA Fingerprinting

Human Body Systems.  Students examine the interactions of body systems as they explore  Identity  Communication  Power  Movement  Protection  Homeostasis  Students design experiments, investigate the structures and functions of the body, and monitor body functions such as muscle movement, reflexes, & respiration.  Students work through real world cases and play the role of biomedical professionals to solve medical mysteries.

Sophomore year activities  Eye Dissection  Kidney Dissection  Work with Frog Muscle Fibers  Clay Maniken Body Systems Building  DNA detectives –DNA Analysis  Cow’s knee dissection  Brain Map swim caps

Medical Intervention  Students investigate the variety of interventions involved in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease.  Through scenarios, students are exposed to interventions related to Immunology Immunology Surgery Surgery Genetics Genetics Pharmacology Pharmacology Medical devices Medical devices Diagnostics Diagnostics  Lifestyle choices and preventive measures are emphasized throughout the course as well as the important roles scientific thinking and engineering design play in the development of interventions of the future.

Junior year activities  Make Antibiotic Resistant E.Coli  UV Sensitive Yeast and Sunscreen Lab  Make Bacteria glow in the Dark  Simulated Laparoscopic Surgery  Learn to stitch  Test your own DNA

Biomedical Innovations  In this capstone course, students apply their knowledge and skills to answer questions and solve problems related to the biomedical sciences.  Students design innovative solutions for the health challenges of the 21st century as they work through progressively challenging open-ended problems.  Students complete an independent project which some use to participate in internships and job shadowing while others develop their own experiments or other activities.

Senior Activities  Design your own Emergency Room  Design your own Experiments on the Human Body Systems  Develop a Prototype of a Medical Intervention  Investigate Water Contamination and it’s relationship to Illness  Isolate and sequence Plant DNA

Life of a Biomed Student  Students take upper level classes including:  –Honors and AP Biology, AP World History, AP English  Participate in many Biomed activities and programs including:  –Local Conference Presentations, National Conference Presentations, Field Trips, Summer Internships
