ELL Specialist Interview Bradi Carpenter

 Dana Vance  ELL Specialist at View Ridge Elementary  Attended PLU  Sponsored runner by Luna! About the teacher!

 These goals are set by the Everett School District  Level 1 students receive ILE (Imagine Learning English instruction)  ILE is a computer game  Level 1,2 and 3 students get pre-taught the curriculum vocabulary  Level 4 students are on a monitor only status  These goals were agreed upon before implementing. Goals of the Program

 All registered ELL students benefit  View Ridge Elementary has 88 registered ELL students  Those who are most involved are students who score a 1, 2, or 3 on the WELPA.  Students who score a 4 are monitored Who Benefits from the Program?

 Frequent assessment of high frequency words and running records to assess the progress  Washington state collects the WELPA data  View Ridge uses district assessments to monitor  Reading (LAP and MSP)  Writing and Math (MSP) Data Collection

Interpreters are provided at these events:  Parent-Teacher conferences  Family Literacy Night  Teaches parents how to help their child in reading  LAP Night  Learning Assistance Program helps with reading, writing and math Family Involvement

 Based on the article Sharing with Latino Parents, I would not recommend this program. The program she seem is describing sounds very basic and state implemented. It doesn’t sound like anyone is going above and beyond for these families or students. In the article it is explained to communicate with families both in person with bilingual staff and over the phone and writing. The classroom teacher did not have any examples of communicating with parents in any form. Would I recommend the program?

 In Involving Latino Families in Schools, Gaitan says, “non-traditional activities are more apt to be co- designed by parents and teachers and involve parents as active participants” (p. 19)  The program at View Ridge Elementary seems very traditional and only involves parents on particular evenings. Would I recommend this Program? (Cont.)
