Criteria for stock selection Consider the following: Customer Demand Stock gaps Stock levels Diversity e.g. of formats Replacement material Stock development plans

Activity 1 – Using your knowledge of the library you work in, identify a type of stock that it would be desirable to obtain Using section one of the unit 4 logbook complete tasks 1.1 to 1.3 If this is a ‘real’ stock need (that can be evidenced) then you can submit the results of this activity as part of your logbook assignment

Online Resources - Online library catalogues - Publishers’ and booksellers websites -Online reviews and personal evaluations See the Unit 4 ‘Stock selection websites’ document on Moodle for examples of each type of online resource

Evaluating Online Resources User friendliness – how easy is the resource to use/navigate Functionality – does it give the information required, are there a variety of search options Reliability – can you trust the information, will the information still be there in the future Accuracy – is the information correct

Evaluating Online Resources Currency – how up to date is the information Sufficiency – is there enough or too much information Format – can the information be saved, printed etc Language – what is the readership level, is it bilingual Authority – who provides the information

Activity 2 – Use and evaluate online stock selection resources Based on the stock need identified in activity 1 select appropriate online resource to use and evaluate (see sections two and three of the logbook) If this is a ‘real’ stock need then you can submit the results of this activity as part of your logbook assignment
