Placement opportunities 3 types of training placement at LSHTM: Short: for research experience or defined project (up to 6 months FTE) –post Part B MFPH exams Longer placement usually for developing academic career/ PhD proposal (12 months +) –post Part B MFPH exams Academic Clinical Fellowships

Policy on academic training Usually post Part B Decision about placement should be made in conjunction with your ES and TPD Once permission has been given, make contact with ES at academic centre (Helen Hogan or Karen Lock) early to begin planning placement Do some homework Current/ previous trainees: Anna Bryden, Dominique Allwood, Vanessa Saliba, Anjan Ghosh, Sam Fox, Fiona Bragg, Lucy Saunders

Short Placements These can be very useful if you want to learn a research skill, get policy experience or academic publications: Linking data collected as part of the national oesophago- gastric cancer audit to HES in order to examine the utility of HES as a data source for assessing the quality of endoscopy services (protocol design, literature review, Stata, handling large datasets) Estimating the likely incremental impact and cost effectiveness of improving or expanding existing Hepatitis B and C testing services in England and Wales (literature review, model development, clinician collaboration)

Longer placements Opportunity for those interested in an academic career or wanting broader engagement with academic life Literature review on the use of telemedicine in cross border care around the world, qualitative study of the experiences of doctors in training in an EU member state other than their own, designing seminar material, seminar leader on module Literature review of the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy in developing countries, mapping study of the global eye care workforce, developing training course and manual for eye health professionals, mentoring FY2 doctor
